Foul-tempered as I am today, I saw this poll and immediately did a search for a previous CJ poll with which to crush and demoralise the originator of this poll.

I was surprised to find that CJ are in fact C/NC virgins however and thus must eat my unuttered words.

NC!

Not crap, and also partially responsible for my foray into punk rock. When I was young at summer camp, the rock-and-roll-loving kitchen cook guy took me under his wing and gave me a tape of this band his friends were in, that did mostly basement-quality feedback-laden songs inspired by bad horror movies. At the end of the tape was a cover of "Coup d'Etat" which I became enamored with quickly. On buying the album to get the original, I THEN found that this band, the Circle Jerks, they do a very funny medley of non-punkrock songs! (Jerks on 45). Salut, Circle Jerks! Your funny and your rock, they are like my chocolate and my peanut butter. Except I still like the funny and the rock.

I was a devotee of Group Sex back in the day, but even as early as their second record, with its goofy cover of "Put a Little Love in Your Heart," I tired of them. I think that Keith Morris' smart-ass whine turned me off, being closer to Jello Biafra than, say, John Brannon or Dan Kubinski. Still, that band kicked ass, and as I've said elsewhere, the circa 1984 Circle Jerks with Biscuits on drums is the tightest, most powerful hardcore band I ever saw. But I never thought I'd listen to 'em again.

Then, a year or so ago, I saw The Decline of Western Civilization for the first time in probably a decade, and I was totally blown away by the Cirtcle Jerks (Lucky Lehrer in particular). I picked up Group Sex on CD soon thereafter and was pleased to find that it holds up very well. Morris' vocals seem smart and funny to me now, while still possessing plenty of Rotten bile. Even moreso I was impressed by the hooks. Maybe only the Misfits were writing catchier songs (among American punk bands) in 1982.

Not crap!
