this is a tough one. i think i'll say crap with heavy waffles. it doesn't offend me, i liked "the scientist". it is very uninteresting, unoriginal music, it's well executed soft rock fluff that unlike most soft rock fluff doesn't make my skin crawl and in the case of "the scientist" actually made me feel a little emo (which can feel a little violating but i didn't mind, at least at the time). it is crass in terms of being kind of like "let's take 'one' by U2 and 'how to disappear completely' by radiohead and make a career out of mashing up those songs". i'm almost tempted to give them a non-crap just for being better than usual radio, which is a good thing as it makes situations where you have to listen to the radio more tolerable. but i'm not going to do that, it's still low common denominator nonsense and they certainly deserve no fanfare.

What are the chances of Coldplay doing anything but shit that sounds like the shit they've already done?

I'll say slim to none. Know why?

They need to move product, bitches. And plenty of it!! Team-Coldplay knows that if they switch it up too much their target demo won't buy it. Test audiences agree that it's very pleasant to be around AS-IS. Ever notice that McDonalds hamburgers taste very similar no matter where you are? There you go.

So I suppose THAT'S what makes those little anti-war things on the singer's hands annoying. I can appreciate the fact that he wants war to end, etc. In fact, I think it's nice that he's put that little message out there. But that's just it......they're "nice, little" messages brought to you by a band that sells it's songs to move other products. To really put my faith and/or trust in that kind of message makes me look like a fool. That music is soothing for a reason, ya know........if you think too much you'll talk yourself out of it.

for years i successfully avoided Coldplay, but this summer, after showing my mom how to load songs onto her iPod, i ended up hearing their music (she has their CDs) and it wasn't as terrible as i'd thought it would be. in fact, i grew to kinda like that song "clocks" which i did my best to ignore when it was first making the rounds. it's simply a good song. i don't like Tears for Fears either, but "Everybody Wants To Rule the World" is track i find enjoyable --- it's kinda like that, can't help liking it, gotta give credit where it's due.

I don't get this. First, let me reiterate, I fucking hate this band and all their music. Having said that: I don't understand the connection between the guy's job (of which we disapprove) and his commitment to a cause. My job probably doesn't inspire you either, and I only do it for the paycheck. Does this mean it would annoy you if I were to express my commitment to the Red Cross or Oxfam or whatever? Does this mean that you're a fool if I convince you to donate or volunteer?

Coldplay is something he does for money (we're assuming). This bothers us because this isn't our idea of what a rock band should be. Anti-War, or Anti-Poverty, or whatever, is something he does for love. I can't help but respect that.

i think this song is quite good, a lot better than any coldplay i have heard

i listened to it closely on the radio the other day

it has straightforward lyrics, heartfelt but specific, and neither simplistic or fulsomely emotional, which is shocking given some of their other output

and the music is accomplished. you have some 80s production to get past, but even that's not too bad, given what it could have been.

this song, she strikes a chord, figuratively speaking, and i think this is always some kind of accomplishment:

to shape, in a few minutes, a particular, nuanced emotional environment that is common to many people who are not either sops or drama queens

and to do so without totally obvious manipulation of the listener via banal tropes of the heartstrings

even as this manipulation of the listener occurs, it must be at least slightly veiled to work properly. to do this kind of sleight of hand is beyond coldplay thus far!

salut, tears for fears...!!! terrible band name, but great slang term for taking a dump!

Alright, Coldplay are CRAP. Such a horrible, horrible band. But while we're sort of on the topic of Tears for Fears, I have to admit that "Head Overs Heels" and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" are both excellent, excellent songs.

Coldplay is boring crap. Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltry would be a real drag to have over for dinner, I'm thinking... this is just the vibe I get from them on TV interviews, but I find them both to be overbearingly self-conscious, guarded and just a general drag. Coldplay = watered-down Radiohead (and Radiohead sometimes tests the limits of my tolerance as it is).

I think they have some fine songs, but they all catchy and sound the same.
I do like more complicated music, but their music kind of catches me(I wont usually change station at my car's radio if I hear them).

The thing with coldplay is that every album of them sounds just like it's predecessor, and that's crap.

C'mon, mang! You're being duped. Sensitive, frontman-guy sold his song "Yellow" to Ford so they could sell some more cars. Do you really think Ford cares for Sensitor's politics of "anti-war, or anti-poverty, or whatever"? No. Then why use his art to sell their oil-burning engine? They're about as big as big-business gets.

I'd have more respect for someone in his position if he'd admit the fact that he's doing what he's doing for the money. I can understand that. I don't understand (or respect) a hypocrite. Apparently, most people do. Blows me fucking mind.
