I like the Strokes. I don't love them but they are a good pop band. I think they have some pretty decent songs. At first i really hated them, but then realised i actually hated the music press (i already knew this but i rediscover this about once a year) and i gave the record another chance. Turned out i liked it. I REALLY like the fact that their second LP is about 27 minutes long. I don't understand why so many 'pop' bands need to have 64 minute long albums with 17 tracks on them. And why so many 'pop' bands seem to want to release singles that are over 5 minutes long.
People disliking the Strokes? - I can totally see your point and fully understand why.
People actively hating the Strokes? - I don't understand. There are obviously thousands of bands past, present and future that are infinitely worse. Why all the hatred?
I imagine alot of people that spit all this bile toward them have been known to say things like "the beatles are shit" too. Not to try and get a bit of attention or anything, but y'know, to make sure that everyone knows they are like, different and have their own taste and don't follow any fucking trends man.
That new single? Oooh i'm not so sure about it. Maybe it's rubbish.

32The Strokes? Weren't they...hmm. Didn't they do...no?..hmmm. That was Jet? Oh ok. Utter fucking crap.

33I have to say, I love the strokes.
Essentially like what has been said before on here, they are JUST a pop band who write pop songs, and they do it really well. If you don't like that sort of thing there's no way on earth you're gonna like it. So really is there any point in restating the obvious.
I love the sound of their first 2 albums and I think Gordon Raphael is great, I've worked with him numerous times and he really is a very very talented man, and he really doesn't realise it at all.
Just heard Juice Box, thought it was quite good really. The main verse parts are a little wierd but the bridge and chorus is melodically amazing. FOR POP. Lets not forget they have gone for the different producer and stuck with it this time, so it's gonna be different.
100% Not Crap

34The new album isn't so good. Starts off well, then drifts into flab and boredom - a strange crime for this band to commit (one thing they've always had going for them is brevity). The vocals and lyrics are good, but apart from that they've lost their way.
The production/recording is somewhere between "naff" and "godawful".

Back off man, I'm a scientist.

35I enjoyed the first Strokes record when it came out--not as "the savior of rock & roll" not as "an updating of the New York underground," but simply as catchy pop music. I heard that record again recently and, like the 80's music it so lovingly apes, it sounded immediately dated, its shelf-life expiring much more quickly than one would expect and definitely more quickly, I'm sure, than they expected.

37I haven't heard all of their songs; do they have one where the guitar doesn't just go na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na na for four minutes?
Crap.
Crap.
Why do you make it so scary to post here.

38I like the Strokes.
I can't believe that I do, but hey, I do. That first record like Brett said was good-time pop. Shit man, I wish all pop music was this entertaining! "Hard to Explain" is a great single and I love the chorus to "Barely Legal." I like that the video for "Last Night" is simply a barebones live performance of the song, though the actual track is clearly the weakest one on the record.
The second record is a different case altogether. The guitar interplay is surprisingly inventive while still making sure that everything has kind of poppy bounce to it. It's a very good rock record. And I love the Tron video.
The Strokes are a first class pop band. Fun-fun-good-rock-and-roll time. And I guess I simply have room for something like that in my life. They are a hype-job, that is for sure. It just so happens that they're also a good band.

why CRAP: first record consists of variations of one songs and no matter how catchy this song is, this blows.
you can say the same about the ramones or the jesus and mary chain, and they are one of the most NOT CRAP bands in the world imho.
that doesn´t mean i´m putting the strokes at the same level of those guys, but well...

that's a good point (despite the fact im not biggest JMC fan in the world). ac/dc and (some albums of) neil young comes to mind too. so let my change my version to "...this blows unless i still like this band"
