Steve Albini is still quite commonly thought of as a "lo-fi recording engineer", especially amongst rockjournalists. Especially amongst rockjournalists who write for fancy glossies. I remember a conversation I had with one of these gentlemen, where he mentioned Albini's purchase of adobe blocks from Arizona for his studio. He meant it ironically, as in: "hardheaded-non-producing-punkrock-noise-engineer-banging-a-record-out-in-a-day my-ass".

I assume that these people are only familiar with the Nirvana and Pixies records, and think that loud stuff like that could've only been recorded on a walkman in the staircase of an apartment building.

With the exception of letting them hear that Mono record, what can you do? It's hard to reason with ignorant people, especially those who consider themselves "in the know".

i do remember reading an interview where steve said he would record anyone who paid him, maybe there were exceptions but i don't recall. it was after he recorded jimmy page and robert plant. i don't think he should have to ever defend his decision to record a band that the indie rock community doesn't approve of.
