I have so amusing story to tell about this movie..maybe not so amusing to everyone, but is funny to me

Okay, in Tucson, Italia we have so many of these kids, they sometime sneak into the movie- is no racist, but sometime, many time, they are these hooligan hispanic kids, okay?

So these friends of mine, are going to see 'the passion' and these kids, they are talking so much and so loud, making noise, even flicking this lighter

My one friend, he is usually soft-spoken, not say so much-but he is going through the troubles right now and just wanted to see the christ movie-so he politely tells the kid, to keep quiet, okay, 'shh!'

The kids, they keep talking, and then my friend, he say more firmly, 'shut up' so, again, these kids keep on talking, talking, more and more..soon is halfway through the movie and the kids are, still talking, even w/ poor christ being beaten, still the talking, so he finally stands up and says 'SHUT THE FUCK UP! YOU LITTLE BITCH!!!!' This is so the funny and sad, to me, that this has to happen in a movie about the loving, gracious Christ.

i have not seen that film, but:

film: Puah! Shit. I can say it beginning right now.

Mel Gibson: I have read that preferred its hobby in order to calm the nerves is to go in the small farms and to kill the year-old calves, not with the gun, the knife. What are you searching of, dirty catholic bastard?

go to drink your own blood and die, motherfucker!

How Wagnerian!!!

Do the jews (short and hairy, just like the Neibelung [this comparison forms the basis of more than a few master's thesis']) then steal the Rheingold, place a curse on it, and force Wotan to place Brunnhilde to sleep in a ring of inpenetrable fire (on temple mount) - only to be awaken by the kiss of an Arayan hero (resurrected) who will later be slain by the very same jews when they take their Rheingold back???

Maybe Mel Gibson's next movie should be a update take on Tannhäuser, set in modern jew infested Hollywood (oh, how decadent!), if he can get anyone short of Kirk Cameron and Dr. Jack Van Impe to work with him. :P

I have seen this movie and feel that more info needs to be added.

In my opinion this is a pretty accurate retelling of the biblical accounts of the crucifixion. Note i said biblical account. It is supposed to be Mel Gibson's vision of what the bible says and that is all. (just to let you know braveheart didn't wear a kilt, that was gibson's vision)

As far at the goriness is concerned, it could have been worse. It is flat out one of the most graphic movies i have ever seen, but i have seen much worse. i have seen videos of people being killed with machetes in Rwanda and a vietnamese being executed by a gun shot to his head by a vietnamese officer - can't remember which side the officer was on - both of these were much more horrifying to me than 'the passion'. Just thinking of these videos is giving me the chills, the joys of being a history major and watching a ton of documentaries, but back to my point. Perhaps, i have been desensitized by the previous videos along with others, but this was a movie, so i still think, 'wow that was incredibly real looking. the effects people did that really well.' Perhaps this is why i think it could have been worse, but i also think that i have good reasons to think the movie could have been much worse.

During the flagellation, the wounds created by the cat of nine tails seemed smaller than i thought they would be. I have seen pictures of former slaves showing their scars and their scars are as wide as the cuts portrayed in the movie. In my experience a scar is usually smaller than the original wound. Maybe they extra heavy duty whips in the deep south, or perhaps Gibson showed restraint or just didn't know any better. (Interestingly, Jim Caviezal wore some sort of protective covering during the shooting of this scene, but on one strike the actor missed and actually hit some exposed skin.) However, they do show what 39 of these strikes would do to a person.

They also don't show the robe that is put on him while the guards beat him after putting the crown of thorns on his head. Well why is that important? If you think about it, he has open wounds and then has a robe put on him. That blood is going to dry, and when they pull it off all of those scabs would be reopened. Just think of the pain that would cause. Yet we don't really see anything of that.

These are the two main reasons why i thought to myself, 'why are all these people so shocked, it was probably worse than this.'

As far as the anti-semitism discussion is concerned it is people not understanding it correctly. In the movie you see the high council or sanhedrin pushing pontius pilate to crucify jesus. They also have people who are following them. This makes sense, because these were the people who stood to lose the most if Jesus was telling the truth and was the son of God. It is no wonder that they wanted him to be seen as a heretic. These aren't the only Jews in the movie though. There are plenty that line the streets weeping or crying out against what is happening. For those that want to talk about anti-semitism, i say open your eyes.

I want to discuss Pontius Pilate's role as well. As Andrew said "In the movie, Pontius Pilate is an ok guy and he tries to reason with the Jews, trying not to kill Jesus." However, if you pay attention you pick up that he has been told by caesar, not sure which one just not julius, to stop killing so many prisoners. Pilate had a history of killing lots of people/prisoners and was facing the reality that he may lose his position if he sentences Jesus to die. You also pick up that if he doesn't kill him then there will be a riot on his hands lead by the sanhedrin. If this happens he could lose his position because he has a history of struggling to keep his region subdued. Therefore, he has to make sure that he can say, 'i didn't sentence him to die. i was only doing what the jewish high council wished.' This doesn't seem like an ok guy to me, but that is my opinion.

Sadly, what is being lost in all of this discussion of goriness and anti-semitism is the actual message of the film and the life of Jesus. I don't want to turn this into a sermon and this is already long enough, but feel free to PM me if you want to discuss it further. I just wanted to throw in my two cents to try and get rid of any misconceptions.

I did vote not crap. If you want to see a movie that shows a very good biblical account of the crucifixion then see this movie. Also, if you want to see an accurate depiciton of Roman brutality and how they really tried to inflict as much pain as possible and to humiliate and everything else then this is a good movie.
