Well, I'll be damned if here on the left coast I don't hear 2 ways of saying it: "Shi-cago" and -- no shit -- "Chi-cago" with a hard "ch" (like cheese).

Sometimes the hard "ch" (a'la cheese) version pisses me off as I've always used the soft "Shi-cago".

I'm willing to admit I'm wrong, however.

There are some who pronounce the Chi but it is pronounced Shi. I moved out to California from Illinois (Rockford) a year ago and hear both as well. I don't really mind since I am not from there. However I get extremely pissed off when people pronounce the s on the end of Illinois. I always say "Where? ... Where?" over and over like an asshole until they pronounce it correctly.

of course it's "Shi" (as in "Shit") "Ca" (like what you call your Honda Civic if you live in Cambridge) "Go" (as in "geddadahe-uh!"). people who pronounce it with a hard "Ch" are probably the same people who call "Italians" "Eye-talians."

...pricks.

anyway: funny, sort-of-related story. i have a french uncle. that is, he was born in and has lived most of his life in france. he makes a point--not really seriously, more as a joke--of pronouncing "Illinois" as "ee-len-WAH". we get a kick out of it.
if i got lasik surgery on one eye, i could wear a monacle.
