yes they do.
until 1983 or so.

14great portrait/montage. Looks nothing like him, but a bold cultural statement.
I saw Diamond Dave recently, on the street here in Vancouver. He looked... how you say in English... careworn? I mean really, really bad. A friend of mine once told me a story about offering him some blow, to which he responded:
"That coke?"
He proceeded to suck up the contents of the entire package in the time it took him to draw his next breath, and then moved on without another word. Kinda sad.
Van Halen? Two words:
Peavey amplifiers

15Not to pick nits but I don't think anyone in Van Halen was using Peavey amps when Diamond Dave was in the band.
Get yer facts right before you cap on these losers.
I still vote NC for VH from '78-'84.

I don't know if that part about the variac is true or not but he used Marshalls back when it mattered.
Next you'll probably start a thread about Queen and Jefferson Starship......
Don't.

Funny! I was just reading some stuff on tone-lizard.com yesterday about variacs, and the author said that EVH did his share of jokingly saying stuff that was absurd and people took it as gospel for decades to come.
I have a theory that the knob on the front of Steve's amp is a variac, not used to do silly shit like work the amp wrong, but rather to make sure the amp is seeing the *proper* line voltage. I have thus far made no effort to confirm this theory.
But yeah, variacs, EVH, etc etc.
I agree on the VH up to and including '84 being kick ass. And Rysie being a knob.
EDIT::
how about some links?

17Pretty much agreed on the Van Halen Rock from '78 to '84 thing.. but man what a sink after that. Crazy From The Heat alone was better than the total of Van Hagar and Van Cherrone.
Except for the dashed out Diver Down -- which still has some great originals buried in there, all of the albums are great.. More to the point, excellent songs surrounded by tolerable songs at the very worst.. highlight songs being "D.O.A." from II, the underrated Women And Children First's "Romeo Delight" and "Tora! Tora!/Loss Of Control", and the two synth-punk tracks "Sunday Afternoon In The Park" and "One Foot Out The Door" that end Fair Warning.. which basically invented the band Trans Am.
(I like 1984 for the three main singles mainly.. but overall, that record is overrated. It's slightly sad that "I'll Wait" was slated to be the big hit on the record.. cowritten by Michael "Yah Mo' Be There" McDonald.. half the budget of the record was probably wasted on that sad sack of a song, it got played on some radio initially, then failed miserably -- thankfully -- so we ended up with "Jump", "Panama", and their cover of "Hot For Teacher" instead. yay.)
(EDIT: didn't mention the first record, because it's mostly solid all the way through.. predictably their best record. "Atomic Punk" is amazing.)

18Also, Alex was one of the few drummers that never had his drums gated either -- in the midst of Peak Drum Gating Of The Early Eighties, if I'm recalling/hearing correctly. (Not that I mind gated drums, but it was refreshing to have at least one big rock band at the time not doing it.)
