Absolutely. There's a sure-free solution to losing games as a result of bad calls: Become such a dominant kick-ass team that the score's not close enough for the umps to make a difference.

pretty funny

If Pods makes the throw (which it looked like he should have) to home in the top of the 9th then the game is over. The homer is nice but some juice for his throwing arm might help, too.

Podsednik's throw was plenty strong enough, but just slightly too far up the line. It was very close to being a perfect throw.

And yes, "the homer is nice."

The homer is nice.

Is it too early to talk about a Sox sweep?

1)Nope, get out the broom

2)Still a long way to go

Sure, the Astros have the great Roger Clemens and a pair of all-around class acts, Jeff Bagwell and Craig Biggio. And Ozzie Guillen of the White Sox is one of the coolest managers around.

But even the Planner admits this World Series lacks glitz. There are no Rally Monkeys, no Idiots and definitely no Yankees.

It's still worth watching, though, even if you're not a serious baseball fan. What makes this matchup so intriguing is that these franchises have suffered for so long. The Astros have existed since 1962 and this is their first World Series.

Until this year, the White Sox hadn't played in the Fall Classic since Oct. 8, 1959. 1959, folks! That's eons in baseball time, but how long ago was that for the rest of us? Let the Planner drop some knowledge. In 1959:

The U.S. and the U.S.S.R. hadn't yet sent a man into space.

Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife" was No. 1 on the Billboard charts.

The Beatles weren't the Beatles. Back then, they called themselves the Quarry Men, and Ringo hadn't joined the group.

Don't even get us started on 1917, the last year the White Sox won a World Series. Woodrow Wilson was President, and the U.S. had another year to go in World War I.

I'm trying to under stand the pessimism, but the Sentinel put "it' in terms I understand

Just sayin'

With the possible exception of Dye, the outfield arms are weak. The throw was offline regardless. If it is to the third base side instead of first the game is over at that point.

Redemption.

bah

you haven't watched this team much

podsednik has a good arm. rowand has an ok arm. dye has a _great_ arm.

it took a great slide to score on that play. pierzynski was two inches from tagging him out.

the throw was fine. not perfect, but fine. if podsednik had not hit that home run, and the sox had lost the game, you would have been the only person on the planet to blame it on him.
