Budget mics for a fledgling home studio

I agree with you there; I think it's the high end. It's always sounded kinda grainy and harsh to me. But yeah, still a solid mic, esp for the small amount of $$$ they cost.

Those Oktava MC012s are really pretty good on things commonly recorded by home recordists.

Acoustic Guitar
Drum Overheads
Various Percussion
Other acoustic stringed instruments
ORTF techniques

I still pick them for acoustic guitar over other more pricey mics quite a bit. YMMV.

Also recommended for cheapskates ;-) :

AT4050 (<$500)
High end is a little sleezy, but is kinda cool. Fine for many vocalists.

Audix I5 ($<85)
Poor man's Beyer 201, really cheap, like a 57. Good for screamo and also guitar, snare drum, etc. Better than a 57 and cheaper sometimes too, depending on where you can get it. I paid $75 brand new for one a few months ago on ebay I think.

Shure KSM141 (<$400)
Totally awesome, but I don't like it on snare drum like electrical chaps seem to. It kills as a room mic in Omni, and sounds quite nice on electric guitar and just about everything else

AT Pro37R(<$110)
Not all that great, but pretty good on everything. Certainly doesn't "sound" cheap. But it acts cheap by having limited headroom. Actually, the limited headroom really hurts it in most applications I like it for. Like toms/snare or electric guitar. The MC012s beat it out on the other stuff it is good at, IMHO (acoustic instruments)

So if you want to spend some money and never look back, buy a Soundelux ifet7 ($1900) It is totally versatile and sounds fantastic on most vocalists. It is killer on electric guitar and kick drum, can be used on a snare drum, and just about everything else. At least demo one if you can.

Also, there are those shinyBox ribbons (<$200) people keep mentioning around here. I've been meaning to try one. http://www.shinybox.com

Best of luck,

Chris

call digikey, they will give the alternative part number which i believe is: 359-1011-ND
i will know for sure next week when I receive my order. my area tech is really confusing me about the 10uf cap...that is the only part i am uncertain about, so any help, specific source part number please, will get you many thanks. he claims that that circuit is in the digikey catalog and that the value of the cap is 1uf. he drinks a fifth of george dickel a day and is a total wreck or completely brilliant.
