i guess i'm a habitual (but not daily by any means) user. there were times it was every day, but they'd be followed by months of non-use.
by the time i settled in at the university of vermont (on scholarship, thanks), i was pretty much over the pot culture that seemed to surround a majority of the students on campus. i ended up rarely partaking in "sessions" that entire year on campus before transfering schools--which was not based on being sick of drug addicts in general, but because a change in major was required.
i don't think it's crap, but i've definitely charted strange psychological changes amongst friends that have used for many, many years.

32the biggest drawback i've observed among pothead friends of mine (and especially their pothead friends) is that many of them have very narrow tastes because when the weekend rolls around it's often just a matter of scoring some pot and sitting around playing video games or watching star wars again.
there's a questionable sort of complacency that often goes hand in hand with being a habitual pothead.

Buddy Rich went through a pound a week, and he felt like a king. I'm sure he passed the duchy though.
Unfortunately, I have seen long-term pot smokers eventually turn into suspicious, bitter I-didn't-get-a-fair-shake type assholes. If you're not one of them, then don't worry about it. If you are, then you shouldn't smoke pot any more.
Well said. I've seen it too, come to think of it.
Strange.

36susanteller wrote:Well, this subject matter is right up my alley. A few years ago, I conducted a sociological research study at my then present college campus as to whether or not regular use of marijuana would cause the user to suffer from a lower than average GPA level. My finding concluded what I suspected all along, given the fact that I, myself, was a 3.8-4.0 student/regular user, 90 percent of students who used regularly had higher GPA levels (3.5-4.0) than those students who rarely or never used marijuana. I only got a B on the paper though. The criminalization of marijuana was based on a Rhesus Monkey study and given the fact that the monkeys were tested by having gas masks placed over their faces and were forced to inhale 1000 times more smoke than the average user, the study, in my opinion, should have been deemed inconclusive and not used as a basis for the criminilization of marijuana. Just my opinion and knowledge on the subject.

37For me: crap.
Being a former pothead myself (I smoked regularly for 17 years), I think it would be interesting to tally up all the times I was actually enjoying myself while high. I really think there would be a much greater percentage of bad times vs. good. Sure I could 'handle it' -- I never got high if I was going to work, but when I was smoking, I would be paranoid and anxious most of the time. Additionally, there were a lot of wasted days where I did the 'wake and bake' and just felt worthless after an hour.
I haven't smoked pot in over a year, and while I am never going to say never (I'm sure I'll do it again some day), I now feel a lot better. There were so many times I'd play shows and have the opportunity to meet interesting people, but the pot would just end up giving me social anxiety, so I'd end up sitting there, mute. I missed out on a lot of potentially cool conversations because of this and worse, some people probably just thought I was snobby for not talking to them.
I'm not completely dissing pot. If it works for you, then fine... but for me, doing it all the time became a real drag. Anycrap, I can buy a whole lot more music these days, which is totally fucking cool!

I remember this from a Shellac gig. The two rules of rock 'n roll:
1. Drummers smoke pot.
2. The assholes are always in front.
Right Steve?

40Crap.
I was one for a bit. I remember being terrified to quit (which I did five years ago) because I thought I needed weed to be creative - to write, to write songs, to play a better guitar, to be more "edgy" and "wacky" with the ads I wrote, etc...
However, once I quit, I found myself to be more of the above than I had while doing it.
More energy, more drive, more self-editing, more creativity.
Less "Duuuh, what was I saying, man?"
Pot head leads to Crap head.
