truthfully, levon helm is a drummer i admire a lot. also i second chris pedersen of monks of doom/cvb. watching him live with monks of doom was powerful. michael dahlquist rates very high as well. the drummer from trans am is a fucking machine. too many great drummers to pick from. cool thread!

Thanks for giving Chris the props he deserves!
BTW, when and where did you get to see them?
Having never seen them myself, I'm kind of envious.

i saw monks of doom around '92 in Ft. Lauderdale. I drove there from Orlando after the outside venue in Orlando was rained out the night before. they were opening for king missile, whose audience there was a bunch of frat guys. the floor was empty when the monks played. my friend and i got ridiculously stoned and watched them play a jaw dropping set that maybe 5 people watched.
they did some reunion shows this year and are putting out a cd of cover songs.http://www.magneticmotorworks.com/html_menu/index.html

78Well, Kieth Moon is up there. Those huge fills were absolutely necessary for a lot of their songs.
Zigaboo, definitely, Elvin, definitely...
Pete Thomas. Fuck yes.

79agreed that the guy from Can is a strong choice. breadth, funk, power, and all the other adjective to describe the art of drumming
WHO is the greatest drummer ever?
80a few great jazz drummers who seemed to be left out:
Brian Blade
Jeff Ballard
Jack DeJohnette
Paul Motian
But when i saw zach hill for the first time a couple years ago... he really blew me away. I saw the "re-formed" don cab that same year, and i still can't decide whether damon che is better. Then there's an entirely different realm of metal drummers, John Longstreth and the like, they deserved to be mention too, i guess.
