Mixes that don t make sense

New ZZTOP remasters of old ZZTOP classic records.

Take Tejas, for instance. The sound of the original vinyl is pure sweet 70's blues funk choogle.

The unfortunately remastered version sounds like they hired a 13-year old to cut and paste out of phase hyper-gated kick & snare replacements from an electronic drum kit circa 1987.

This, I remember reading, was done to "update" the sound

I was never quite as happy with ZZTOP as before.
It's like you put everything into a bottle inside itself.

No shit!

I always get pissed when I play a ZZ Top song on the bar jukebox only to discover it's the "remastered" version. Infuriating!
**Do we need the other Chemical Bros. records??

i'm glad i'm not the only one who noticed that about the new broken social scene lp. what were they going for? they sound roughly like they thought of some good ideas for songs and then threw them into a giant furnace about mid-way through every song.

"you forgot it in people" had some dinosaur jr style noise for sure but at least you could hear the songs.

Could it have been intentional?

Same with everything on Mogwai's Ten Rapid.

Probably intentional.

Turn up your stereo for the quiet parts and the loud parts are much more loud and dramatic. Modern mastering seems to take away this fun, as well as everything gets louder and eveny out by some kind of unspoken modern template.
