I recently bought a used 00 4 Runner for pretty much the same reasons as Peripatetic outlined and I have to say that I quite like it.

The $2000 used 78 BMW I bought for my wife (me) turned out to be the biggest piece of shit on earth (such a bad idea, but it was so cool I couldn't resist!) and we needed a second car in a hurry as I commute 25 miles each way to my job. Our family is getting bigger, I wanted something 4 wheel drive for winter, I wanted to be able to haul stuff around if needed and it was an amazing deal. Sold.

She drives it during the week to her job close to home, probably 30 miles a week and I drive a 98 VW Golf to work unless it snows. On the weekends we drive whatever is necessary, usually the car.

I don't think this is environmentally irresponsible. Am I wrong?

I agree that the XL SUVs, the huge-wheeled-jacked-up trucks, and Hummers are ridiculous. There are way too many of these around my parts. Some of these guys put fake balls on their rear axles.

Amazing.

-a 2x12" cab and 50w head
-two guitars in hardshell cases

in my 1983 Chevette! (with no room left for pax)

Yeah, I forgot to say that my VW can fit a stunning amount of stuff in it with the back seats down and the trunk cover removed. I have surprised many people. Doesn't leave any room for more than one passenger however.

Hatchbacks are awesome.
