Horrible news. Absolutely horrible. The good thing is he left behin an amazing legacy. Richard Pryor is funny-as-fuck. As a kid my parents had the live albums Craps, and Is it Something I Said, both are two amazing comedy albums. I'd play them very softly in my bedroom.

Silly movie, but, [/i]Bustin' Loose[/i] starring Cicely Tyson was a favorite of mine as a kid. He's a con-man driving a dilapidated bus filled with problem children cross-state. What makes the movie for me is the song they play over the end credits. It's a chorus of kids singing "na-na-na's" to the most infectious melody. There's something, like, four chord changes in it. Very celebratory.

My favorite flick would have to be Stir Crazy with Gene Wilder. Now, that is some funny shit.

I am always sad to see a person die who's life work was to entertain, delight or beautify the world. They make it easier for us to live in it. Pryor lived his life as he saw fit and entertained us all in the process. Why is it the comedians are always the ones who tell it to us straight?

On NPR today they quoted him from an interview in the '90's after being diagnosed with M.S. where he talked about how he had no regrets about how he lived because "no matter which way you slice it, you're not getting out of this alive. So you might as well enjoy life while you have it."

How true.

RP was great.

He not only took comedy to new heights, but he was able to do so while proving himself to be a first rate raconteur. His comedy was filled with real life experiences and lessons, a feat few others have accomplished. He could be down right tender in the detail and care he poured into characters like Mudfoot. Bill Cosby from the brothels.

I don't think anyone ever really gave him a proper filmic vehicle for his talents. He had depths that were never captured or called upon in his movies. Maybe the work he did was the writing creds he got for Blazing Saddles.

God of Lates, You Crazy Nigger, You.
