long time reader, first time poster...
I know this is an eyerollingly old question, but my partner and I have taken to exploring options to mix "out of the box".
We recently were too slow to nab a local neotek series II, but it got our juices flowing to get a sweet board.
So what board does everyone use to mix?
Thanks,
mark

2about a year ago i got a sony mxp 3036. it's awesome. clean sounding with nice eq and mic pre's. for the price i paid ($5000) i don't think i could have found a better board. both api and john hardy make mic pre's and eq's that fit right into the channels if you want to step up from the stock sony modules. i got it from AEA in california which seems to be the place to go to for the sony boards. wesdooley.com will have all the info you need.

3We've had a Neotek Elan for about three years now. It's, umm, fine. Not exceptional, but it was a huge jump for us at the time and is comfortable enough to work on.
Now, though, we're thinking about moving on, but I'm wary of making a "lateral move" -- I'd really like us to find something considerably better, but I can't afford the API's I've been drooling over.
I've been thinking about MXP 3036's (mainly because of the modularity) and 80B's. Has anyone worked on these enough to give a fair comparison?

4i have a 36 channel board. thay also made a 20 channel. mxp3020.
i don't have all that much experience on other "good" consoles but the sony is way better than all of the other low to mid priced boards i have used. i was an intern at a studio about 6 years ago that had an elan. at the time it was the best thing that i had seen. thinking about it now i would prefer the sony but i'm sure there are people more qualified to compare the two.

5I've used both the MXP and 80B series.
The 80B was a great sounding console, especially if you like the sound transformer coupled I/O's gives you. It made for good rock/pop sounds. I didn't like the side by side channel/monitor layout, however. In fact, I hated it. The one I used had an old patchboard that desparately needed jackfield replacement.
The layout of the MXP is great for mixing. If I remember correct, the standard layout is tape-to-fader and the rotary pot was for input to monitor, right? The EQ's not bad. The mic pre's leave much to be desired, but you'd either go outboard, or you can get the replacements from Hardy or API for the quantities you really need. The VCA automation was easy enough to use, but I never did.
Given a choice, I'd probably go for the MXP and budget a few thousand extra for some Hardy pre's. I think that an 80B could be more maintenance than I'd care to be faced with.

Stupid me. Should've guessed that the "3036" meant a 36-input.
Thanks for the opinions.

7I bought a Neotek Series I for 5000 $CAD. It's being delivered this weekend. Shame I don't have an actual studio to put it into, but all that will come in time, and for now, I can master the thing.

i didn't like it very much when i first started working on it. now, a little over a year later, i am much more comfortable with it and i have noticed my mixes improve in that time. the one thing that bothers me most is the LF shelving EQ fixed at 100 Hz. it can be handy for subtractive EQ, but it is next to useless for adding bottom to something.
