They RULE on toms. Period.

Search eBay and get a few on the cheap. You won't be sorry.

I don't love them that much... But they're affordable, they work anyway! Anywhere else as on toms... hum... not sure...

Theyre decent mics, but Ive only ever used them for live sound. I dont know if they would be that great for recording, as I'm nervous about the potential for picking up noise and vibration when recording with mics that mount on the drums. But they sound pretty good on toms.

One medium-sized plus -- theyre tiny, so theyre easy to get in there under the cymbals, etc.

I used some 504 mics once, and hated them. Dullest mics on toms I'd heard in a long while. Very robust though.

I have a "3-pack" of e604s that I use, mostly for toms and bottom of the snare and stuff. Mostly I bought them because at the time, it meant I didn't have to buy three more mic stands, and I was trying to get the studio up cheap and fast (isn't everyone?).

They sound decent. You won't be like "awwww DUDE check out how these mics SOUND" but you won't hate them either. They're definitely usable, if a bit uncharacteristic. They also take a lot of abuse.

The only thing that's kind of a pain about them is that on the smaller toms it's often easier to use a regular mic stand rather than the clip mount, because with the clip mount the mic protrudes too far onto the drum head, and you can't get it to point at the right place on the drum for the best sound.

Also, if the drums have RIMS mounts then they can be a pain to position correctly. Oh wait, that's two things. Meh.

Other than that -- until I can afford to spend $900 on some 421s for toms, these are the mics I will use.

My friend also bought a three pack of these. He wasn't very impressed. He preferred a 57 on toms over them.

But... then again he loves the 57.

I often use 504's on toms - I first found out about them when someone brought one in to mic up a bodhran (Irish drum) and it sounded far better than anything else.

If you have the old style mic clips then a good trick is to mounth the mic on the back of the clip. Like you, I often use them on short stands though.

Yeah I've flipped the mount around on the smaller toms when I'm out of stands. I still find it doesn't get quite close enough to where I want though.

I will say that they sound better than sm57s.
