While I have no idea what the world record for "fastest fastball" is, I can say with certainty that a major-leage fastball averages about 88-90 mph. However, there are loads of "power pitchers" whose fastball regularly exceed 95 mph. Kerry Wood, Rodger Clemens, Randy Johnson, Carlos Zambrano and scores of others reach that number on almost every pitch, usually with sinking or breaking movement. There are a handfull of relief pitchers who regularly hit or exceed 100 mph. The Cub's Kyle Farnsworth is one.

A 71 mph fastball in MLB would be considered extremely hitable, unless you were able throw a change-up, curve, slider, or knuckle-ball from the exact same arm-slot.

Hmm, I totally interpreted his post another way. I thought he was implying "how fast can you people throw?"

If that was the case, I can't throw for crap--65 max and all over the place.

If it was the other question, the human anatomy seems to be limited to throwing a projectile at speeds under 110 MPH, at least for the time being. Come on Evolution, make me a star.

I don't bring heat, myself... I'd guess my fastball prolly clocks in somewhere around 50mph. My slow-curve with a wiffle ball will fuck your shit up, though.... But a few of my fav fireballers are:

Billy Wagner -- You don't want to see this guy's shit in the 9th. Used to pitch for the Astros, but was mercifully traded to the Phillies (I'm a Cubs fan). Brings fuckin' GAS -- a comicbook fastball that on some radar guns clocks at a ridiculous 102mph. I remember last season watching a game on ESPN (with the cool camera angles you don't get on regular games), sort of a point-of-view shot from the hitter's perspective, and the fastball was nasty, like plasma, like like....

Koufax -- OK, OK, that's an easy one. But have you ever seen those slow-motion films of him bringing the heat? They look (in slow-motion) like a fastball by, say, Woody Williams. Hot hot hot.

Bob Gibson -- Again, dipping back in the history books. How fast did the guy throw? I don't know. But he's about the last pitcher I'd ever want to face (to this day). A mean-ass on the mound. Bob Costas got a base hit off him at a charity game, and Gibson said if he had faced him again, he would've hit him. Check out his ERA from '68 (or was it '69)....

Alright. That's enough for now. I have no fastball.... I cannot throw a ball fast, that is to say....

In high school I brought heat in the mid 80's, but had little or no control at that speed. When I took a little off I could throw a forkball that would sink and cut (inside on lefties, out-side on righties.) It was my most effective pitch. I also had a rather weak curve that I would throw as a change-up, and often fooled more inexperienced batters. By the time I reached my senior year, my peers caught up with me and I was hit mercilessly all over the place. I haven't pitched competitively since.

Last year, however, at a carnival, I threw a fastball that was clocked by an obviously faulty machine at 91. I won a stuffed Spongebob Squarepants doll for knocking styrofoam teeth out of a giant clown's mouth. Next to the walk-off bases-loaded hit I managed once, it was my single greatest accomplishment as a baseball player.

Okay, I will mention this here, as no one will listen to me anywhere else. My little brother is a much better pitcher than I was and will undoubtedly ask me to mention that he once struck out Oakland A's 2002 first-round pick Nick Swisher three times in one game. What he would not like to mention to you is that Nick Swisher's 4th at-bat resulted in a three RBI double that cost the Weir High Red Riders a shot at the state championship.
