hi folks...
for a year now i've been on music "culture" hiatus via sound guy burnout... now i'm diving back over to the other side of the board and have been getting a new band together. we have been getting some writing done and have (prolly) found a drummer... now we just need some of that ever so precious chicago practice space. would anyone here have any suggestions? preferably something in or near the "west town" area. cost is a serious consideration...

Compared to the bay area, those seem like a dream.

This is closer to Rockwell, right? I had my PA get ruined there from the roof leaking. That was also 9 years ago, so I dunno how things are today. Oh, and Chris from Chinup Chinup had someone break into his band's room and steal all his cymbals.
That place was awesome, though crappy.
Don't forget about Superior Street!!! It seems like everybody plays there nowadays.

6i have rehearsed at these two places:
If this is "Superior Street" studios, it's a waste of money unless you're on the first floor. To use the elevator for shows, you need to have one of the staff pilot the thing. The staff is off a 9pm. Which means, that after you get done with a show, you have to use one of their temporary storage lockers, and then reschedule another time to use the elevator to load your stuff back into the room. It's very safe, and there are cameras and keyless entry. The walls are really thin.
This place smells like armpits and fish. the elevator breaks down, mark is a slimeball who will screw your door shut when rent is late (which is fine, but he had our room and another room mixed up, so we had our doors screwed shut maybe ten times for someone else's delinquency). John and I got stuck in the freight elevator for two hours once because it broke while we were on it. The lot behind this place is not safe to leave your cars, even just to load in as the tow trucks are hawks (E&T towing are cunts).
we spent three and a half years here. really cheap, leaky ceilings. restroms are unacceptable if you have a woman in your band or need to take a dump.
hth.

Hey! I was carjacked after practice one night at the space on Rockwell and North! Such a shithole!

There are crispy fries waiting to come out of your oven: you just have to make them and put them there.

It is not! Superior Street is only a few blocks away, though. they are similar places, VERY, VERY big with over 100 rooms each. Multiple floors. Long hallways, etc.
Superior Street is at Superior and California. Sacramento and Carroll is probably 5 blocks away, if that.
Don't you love Chicago!!!??!??!
There are NO places like this in DC. Not even one that anybody could ever tell me about. I fricken hated it!

9ah....My bandmate has a room at the ones on Carroll and Sacramento then. they are similar (keyless entry/cameras, etc.) I don't know what their elevator system is though. the elevator system @ superior blows.
thanks, scott.

Hey! I am sorry to hear this, wes9, but I am not surprised. My car's window was smashed outside of it in broad daylight within a five minute window of being unattended!
I have seen cops around for three different shootings in one summer within two blocks of this space!
I have seen a barefooted woman walking through broken glass yelling at some guy throwing things immediately outside the door!
I have had the landlord of this place back into my amplifier with his van!
We have had two cars towed from behind the space within ten minutes!
