I have a fond memory of the 1998 Chicago Bulls NBA championship. This was the last of the Bulls' six championships. As you might recall, the Chicago Bulls had displaced the Detroit Pistons as Eastern Conference and NBA champions following the Pistons' championship seasons in 1989 and 1990. You might also recall that the Bulls-Pistons rivalry had become very nasty during that time period.

Anyway, for some reason I found myself at Rush and Division following the last game of the 1998 championship series. Bulls fans had congregated there, and they were very excited about this sixth Bulls championship.

Among this crowd of Bulls fans were two men who were holding placards with handwritten messages. What did their signs say?

"Go Bulls"?

"Sweet Home Chicago"?

"The Joy of Six"?

No. Their signs did not say those things. Instead, these two men held signs that said:

"Detroit Still Sucks"

and

"Fuck You, Laimbeer"

Anonymous and bitter Bulls fans of 1998, I will always smile when I think of you.

one of my favorite basketball memories was watching laimbeer get a breakaway, then stand directly under the hoop, alone, and miss like 5 shots in a row. he then took the ball and slammed it on the ground as hard as he could while letting out a violent shout. i laughed.

i was pretty young in those days but watching the pistons win back to back championships while sipping on faygo moon shine (which is now known as moon mist and used to feature a hillbilly on the bottle) with my grandmother were perhaps my greatest sports memories. so, even if bill laimbeer was a cocksucker, i can't hate him.

Yeah it does.
That's two people I'd rather shake hands with than you.

Anyone saying "crap" didn't watch him play or they weren't paying attention. Mofo could seriously rebound by boxing out alone. Good outside shooter who could bury the three. Could get under an entire opposing team's skin - throwing them off their game while drawing meltdowns / technicals from frustrated peeps better than anyone. Ex-players swear that while attempting to gain position for a rebound he could surreptitiously apply nerve holds that could paralyze limbs. The only real knock on him was that he couldn't fight to save his life - thing is he was an agitator not a brawler. Ultimately, he's got two rings as a Piston and one as a WNBA head coach - guy's a baller. NOT CRAP...
