Why?

What is it about speaking or writing under one's legal identity that warrants respect 'by the fact itself?'

If I woke up tomorrow and learned that the Bradley R. Weissenberger who posts on this board was not Bradley R. Weissenberger but, say, Brenden Weissen (or whatever), it wouldn't make a lick of difference to me. I don't see why it should.

It's not a legal thing, surely; is it a good vs. bad faith thing? Are the anonymous and pseudononymous necessarily posting in bad faith or something?

This is not a hostile question. I honestly don't understand the concern with other people's names.

If anything, I'm far more disgusted by the authenticity of Matthew's posts than anything that MadChaos-dweeb said.

Just because Matthew takes complete responsibility for both his bigoted views as well as his firmly intact hymen does not warrant any respect from me.

I was convinced for a while that Brett Eugene Ralph was an amalgamation of really american names to make one super-american name, worn only by a small boy with one of those helicopter hats. Until I saw a dedication to Mr Ralph on a Palace Brothers record. Though that doesn't cancel out the hat.

My name is not Chapter Two.

I'm with Andrew L. on this. If we all, say, had a class or a job together, and knew each other by our real names, but nobody knew which guy in the class/on the job was "same" or "Linus van Pelt," but everyone knew who Bradley R. Weissenberger and Brett Eugene Ralph were, then I think there would be a point to it. But am I really any more or less anonymous as Linus van Pelt than as Linus R. Banghart? Anyone who wants to know my real last name can look at this post, or at the "Let us see you" thread, or just ask me, or ask Tom. But for anyone who knows me solely through this forum, "Linus Van Pelt" is just as useful as a unique identifier as "Linus R. Banghart."

Does anyone have his or her home address in the "Location" section of the profile? I don't think so. Cowards, all of you!
Why do you make it so scary to post here.

I'm not sure that I agree with Andrew or Mr VP on this point. One of the reasons that this board is so good is (I reckon) the fact that people write as if there might be a genuine consequence to an internet-action.

Of course there probably won't be (unless Rysie turns stalker), but it's cool that there are clearly real people reflected in posts rather than a daft 'online personsas.

In this environment, I am...erm...'suspicious' is too strong a word...I find it impossible to take seriously the views of those who are determined to maintain anonymity.

Probably just me though.

I agree, though I hadn't thought of it that way before. I also invented a person to be on here that didn't have to be my usual, straight-up self. It was fun for a while but I got bored of it really quickly. I wonder if the same goes for others.
