This in no way explains what I was asking, because all modern religeons have these types of texts. Thanks, but I'm looking for a rational reason why people would torch buildings over cartoons.

Well, once you step off the reality platform into the realm of the nonexistent, i.e. believing in God, the rest just kind of flows naturally.

exactly. there can be no rational explanation for this as this is a purely religous matter. you either believe your gawd feels offended by a drawning of him and this is your duty to fight with the author of it and the people backing him up, or you don't.

i agree with most of what has been said here (those cartoons are stupid, but the right to print them is not negotiable). i'd like to add a few points:
old testament clearly says any representation(drawning, sculpulture, anything) of jahwe is forbidden. some of catholics uh 'fractions" still obey this law, roman catholics obviously don't.

it took a long time for western civilization to seperate the church and the state. i have no idea if muslims are ever going to accomplish that, but it's crucial for us (western civilization) not to step back by a centimeter. freedom of expresion is on the most important values of our culture and if they have problems with it they can, well, fuck off. lt's like taking your shoes off when you you're entering a mosque, or wearing a chador on the street of a strick muslim country (for women, obviously). we have to respect it when we are in their land, an they have to respect our values when they are here.
will they ever learn that a mahomett-bashing cartoon is not a crime, or that this is totally unapropriate to demand an apology from a goverment of a country it was print in, i don't know. (by the way, it clearly show the distance between those two cultures). but this is not our problem. this is why i totally support reprininting this cartoon, despite the fact i find it moronic, offensive, unapropriate and no funny at all.

and another issue: will the eastern and western civilization will co-exists without at least one major military conflict in (near?) future? i highly doubt it, and im glad this our side who have the nukes.

Can you imagine the size of the glass ashtrays that would make?

about 12,576 km in diameter, in the worst case scenario.

The reprinting of the cartoons seems primarily an aggressive political statement by the press. We rightly condemn the anti-semitic trash printed in certain parts of the Middle-Eastern press and we should condemn the reprinting of the Muhammad-bashing art.

This was done to piss people off. The irrationality of the tenets that the press are transgressing is irrelevant - the reprinting is an offensive act, done consciously to stir up trouble with an already upset and unstable group of people. It's irresponsible.

I may support the right to print, but I loathe the sanctimony and ill-intentions of those who did so.

I don't believe in god. I am highly suspicious of and angry with religion for its recent ruining of my personal life. I think the protests are irrational and crazy if you take them at face value.

But the protesters read the media's recent actions as a big fuck you aimed directly at them, and I completely understand why they think this.
