Whoa... I'm from Clear Lake...

West Bay Area Blvd., about a block from Baybrook Mall!

Too creepy.

Are there any decent bars around here?
I just moved here pretty much. I drink at Molly's sometimes... it's decent at best.

Where in Austin are you moving?
I could have been a contender...

Old Style is my favorite cheap beer. They also have a knock off called Heilmanns Classic Draft that's even cheaper that I think is better. I have given it to folks in a glass without telling them what it was, and they all thought it was great.

Mickeys Big Mouths are an exceptional deal at the $4 range.

Serling and Burger are passable.

Grain Belt used to be my favorite cheap beer, but they sold to another brewer who tweaked the recipe in a shitty way, and now charge more. They had a malt liquor called GBX that was real cheap and tasty and the can was really fuckin' cool looking.

I have drifted into a love of Miller Lite, when in a bottle and ice cold.

I used to live above a liquor store and they sold Huber Beer (not the dark bock) by the case -- returnable bottles -- for around $10. That beer was great. Haven't seen it in years.

Hamm's is a funny cheap beer. I like Schlitz, too.

There's a beer in Minnesota called Pig's Eye. Cheap as hell, not too bad. And there's a pirate on every (gold) can!

Molly's is the only decent bar in that entire area. The one in Clear Lake is the best followed by the one in League City. Whatever you do stay the hell out of the one in Kemah. In fact, stay out of Kemah period. The whole area sucks because of that touristy boardwalk crap and the cops are complete tools. If you want a decent bar you're going to have to drive up into Houston. If you do that, I suggest Rudyard's or maybe The Proletariat.
The former is more of a traditional British pub type place and has a pretty good beer selection along with good food. Their burgers are great if you're on the carnivore side of the fence. The latter is a "trendy" type place with a decent jukebox. Although, they have $1 pints of Shiner on Sundays which is nice. I've also heard good thing about Alice's Tall Texan but I've never been. It's a neighborhood ice house on N. Main that closes at midnight. If you try it and you're not in a beer mood she only serves setups, from what I've heard though it's pretty cheap. I'm sure there's lots more that I don't know about.

I'm not really sure yet. My g\f and I are looking at some places in the central part of town but we haven't decided. Preferably somewhere within easy walking distance of the essentials.

My vote usually goes to Huber Bock or Black Label.
Black Label actually kind of sucks, but it is called black label, so it is cool.

Huber Bock is awesome. Just make sure you don't cut your lip on the chipped bottle. It's like 12 buck for a 24 case of bottles here.

...and PBR.

I'll second that on the Huber Bock. Grain Belt "Primo" was OK too.

Worst cheap beers I've had were "Cold Spring", the most godawful beer ever. You could actually taste the piping used in the manufacturing process. Falstaff was pretty vile too. Some friends used to drink alot of Olympia - don't know why....

tthomas... I think we might run in the same circles. I frequent Rudyard's, the Proletariat, and the Tall Texan. I have played at Rudyard's a few times, but play out mostly at the Proletariat now. I'm in the band Sjolander, you might have seen us maybe once or so. We used to play alot. And we used to have a shite drummer, but we got a new one. I have also been in Drill Box Ignition, I Dream in Stereo, Cats in Pianos, and many other musical projects. I've probably seen you before.

As for Kemah... I know how lame that place is, because I work in that hellhole. I work at Joe's as a waiter. I've been to that Molly's out there a bunch too. I almost got my ass kicked there, and I lost $20 to some bar broad. She was ugly and shot pool like a man. Quite embarrassing.

So, do you play in a band around town?
I could have been a contender...

There was this cheap shit back in my early collage days '93-4 called Rhinelander "refreshing as wisconsin's northwoods" read the tag line. I dunno, maybe a budget Lienie offering? Anyways, back then it was $7 a case with a dollar back when you returned the bottles. We used to buy 7 cases at a time so it we could get 7 for the price of six. I think the price rocketed to $11 not to long after that.

As for taste, I don't recommend it. It's really the price the ranked it high in this survey.

PBR and Old Style are my current standby, but I used to have a thing for Michelob before the bottles became less sexy.

about time someone mentioned Schlitz!
suprised it didnt come up sooner as we have a few on here from Milwaukee...

I think Schlitz it a damn fine beer...I know it is inexpensive, but only relative to bar prices...I personally would put it above PBR, but it is all subjective anyway...

cheers,
spoon
