Most of my band names were Crap.

The only one I shall deign to share with you is Flipper Baby, made up by the guitarist as reference to the thalidamide babies with flipper arms that popped up now and again in the '70s. Maybe not an entirely original name, maybe actually even take by other bands, but who gives a fuck?

I mostly liked it for the "Flipper Jr." double meaning. Even though we didn't sound like Flipper, they were like spiritual fathers for us.

I was in a band calld the Soul Merchants, which was a name I stole from a Vonnegut book (was it Deadeye Dick?). I think that name was not crap. After I left, the band changed its name to the Mojo Filters, which its members took from a Beatles song, so I guess its okay.

I was in a band called 2=3, which I think is a fantastic band name. It was me and a guitar player, who named the band, for a long time, with various drummers. Then I left the band, he got a new bass player and drummer, then he left the band, so that now 2=3 has no original members. I think it is weird when a band with none of the original members continues using a name thunk up before any of them were in the band.

I am now in The Transmissions, a name created before I joined. I like the name, but the pluralness of it makes it a bitch to come up with proper sentences: "The Transmissions is a band from Los Angeles, CA." Also, I have realized that I think of motorcycle transmissions, while the bandmates think of radio transmissions, which means, I guess, that we're not even using the same band name, in some sense. Still, not crap, because of the opportunity for taking pictures of our band name affixed to shop signs in industrial areas.
If it wasn't for landlords, there would have been no Karl Marx.

i had a band called "celindine". i made it up. it was crap.

then i had one called "trompedo". it was my nickname. my friend in the band gave me the nickname and then wanted to use it for the band. probably crap.

i had another band called "sad like crazy". i had written it on a piece of paper and my wife picked it. it was crap.

i am not in a band now, but I have a drummer and we are making songs. i plan to call the band "the injured minnow". it is probably the crappiest name yet. or maybe it is the best one there has ever been. that's for god to decide.

Malignant Growth: I joined this already established band at fifteen. I found the name embarrassing and felt that it held us back--that plenty of people might've liked us who would never go see a band called "Malignant Growth," but what do you know at fifteen? Now I think it's one of the coolest names for a punk rock band ever. Not crap.

Fading Out: Finally, after getting a new drummer and slowing down our attack a bit, I convinced the guys in the Growth to change our name to a phrase from a Stooges tune. Our bass player said, "If we call ourselves 'Fading Out,' we probably will." And we did. When I told Steve we were changing our name to Fading Out, he said, "That sounds like Steppenwolf or something." Foolishly, I took this as a compliment. Not crap, high waffle.

The Sound and the Fury: I was the token poet in a garage band formed by a bunch of fiction writers in my MFA program. Terrible band, terrible name. Our opening band was once a mime. A mime! Crap.

Rising Shotgun: I'm still fond of this name because it could apply to a punk rock band, a metal band, a country band, or a Southern rock band--and I guess we were trying to be all of those things at once. Not crap.

Brett Eugene Ralph's Kentucky Chrome Revue: Still too soon to tell.

My Goddamn band is called Triceratops so you can make up your own mind what I think of that.
Someone wants to search my house...what's a reasonable response to that? I know, I'll grab a fucking gun and threaten to kill them, at the end of the day everyone will be happy. Your mindset is fucked and you live in a dream world.
