And right now, i see clearer than most
As i sit here contented with this cheese on toast.

Ha, I always thought he said "contending".

I was always fond of these rap lyrics:

Come on, although ya try to discredit
Ya still never edit
The needle, I'll thread it
Radically poetic
Standin' with the fury that they had in '66
And like E-Double I'm mad
Still knee-deep in the system's shit
Hoover, he was a body remover
I'll give ya a dose
But it'll never come close
To the rage built up inside of me
Fist in the air, in the land of hypocrisy

Movements come and movements go
Leaders speak, movements cease
When their heads are flown
'Cause all these punks
Got bullets in their heads
Departments of police, the judges, the feds
Networks at work, keepin' people calm
You know they went after King
When he spoke out on Vietnam
He turned the power to the have-nots
And then came the shot

Yeah!
Yeah, back in this...
Wit' poetry, my mind I flex
Flip like Wilson, vocals never lackin' dat finesse
Whadda I got to, whadda I got to do to wake ya up
To shake ya up, to break the structure up
'Cause blood still flows in the gutter
I'm like takin' photos
Mad boy kicks open the shutter
Set the groove
Then stick and move like I was Cassius
Rep the stutter step
Then bomb a left upon the fascists
Yea, the several federal men
Who pulled schemes on the dream
And put it to an end
Ya better beware
Of retribution with mind war
20/20 visions and murals with metaphors
Networks at work, keepin' people calm
Ya know they murdered X
And tried to blame it on Islam
He turned the power to the have-nots
And then came the shot

Uggh!
What was the price on his head?
What was the price on his head!

I think I heard a shot
I think I heard a shot
I think I heard a shot
I think I heard a shot
I think I heard a shot
I think I heard, I think I heard a shot

'He may be a real contender for this position should he
abandon his supposed obediance to white liberal doctrine
of non-violence...and embrace black nationalism'
'Through counter-intelligence it should be possible to
pinpoint potential trouble-makers...And neutralize them,
neutralize them, neutralize them'

Wake up! Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!
Wake up! Wake up! Wake up! Wake up!

How long? Not long, cause what you reap is what you sow

I was wondering if Mr. Rodney Smith was ever getting a mention.

Ditto on "contented/contending".

"Best Hip Hop Rhymes" are as follows:

Pharoahe Monch wrote:Decapitate his ass, smack him, slap him in the back of the truck
Exasperate the life of his man and then pack it up
Cut off his hands and send his girl multiple finger sandwiches
If she manages to damages, put her in bandages
The amateurs - bananas is the unaninmous way we choose to live scandalous
Even with doorknobs you couldn't handle this

Mr Tanx, I actually wrote an essay on the politics of music which centered around RATM.

You should check out "Bulls on Parade" and "People of the Sun"...

Anyway, has anyone here listened to Skinnyman? I'm sure someone will complain...

Skinnyman wrote:dont have to look for trouble, trouble itll find ya,
dont turn around it'll be right behind ya,
then september the 11th will remind ya,
nobody aint too major or minor,
if your bruck an the streets are in a brand new recliner,
grab ya dicks an girls rub ya vagina,
pay the pound i'll provide the punchliner
might look young but im a real old timer.

Better in context though...

This one has funny imagery:

Dr. Dre wrote:Chicken head, chicken fed, wit' a dick in ya mouth.

ie. a chicken's head bobbing up and down...

I concur.

Rakim wrote:My mind starts to activate, rhymes collaborate
Cause when I heard the beat, I just had to make
Something from the top of my head
So I fell into the grooves of the wax and I said
"How can I move the crowd?"
First of all, ain't no mistakes allowed
Here's the instructions, put it together
It's simple ain't it, but quite clever

Nas wrote:Rappers, I monkey flip 'em
with the funky rhythm I be kickin'
musician, inflict the composition
of pain I'm like Scarface sniffin' cocaine,
holdin' a M-16
see with the pen I'm extreme,
now
bullet holes left in my peepholes
I'm suited up in street clothes
hand me a 9 and i'll defeat foes

Nas also wrote:Beyond the walls of intelligence, life is defined
I think of crime when I'm in a New York state of mind

King Geedorah (MF DOOM) wrote:He only here to warn us what the plan is
the hour is upon us, it's bananas.
Born alone, die alone no matter who your man is
Hope he live long enough to tell it to his grandkids
King Geed'rah - three finger ring fever
spring chicken eater ID'd as a ringleader
Who needs a heater?
catch him with bare hands!
these same hands that make razors outta beer cans

more to come.

I am not very familiar with Skinnyman - as he became "known", I was losing interest in the Hop of Hip. Why so much the mysoginy and the repetitiveness? So boring!

It came to a point for me where American rappers would say: "yo, suck my dick, bitch, and while you're down there, suck my dick"

...and British rappers would say: "I am so misunderstood and the government of this country is disgraceful"

In any case, I would say that in my (very) limited knowledge of the music of Skinnyman, I find him to be at least slightly more credible than the majority of hip hop performers. His name is rubbish, though.

(I had not thought to mention RATM. I was a big fan, but the lyrics never appealled very much, anyway. My favourite song was "Vietnow")

If you scroll down to section 7 on this page you will find a lot of RATM lyrics explained. I found this to be a great introduction to politics when I read it some years ago.

Has anyone mentioned Del yet?

Kids wanna ride the back
What kinda shit is that?
Nowadays niggas can't wait to hit the back
Let me stand in the front with the elderly
So those other cats won't raise hell with me

...They disrespected mama and treated her like dirt
America took her, reshaped her, raped her
Nope, it never made the paper
Beat us, mated us
Made us attack our woman in black
So I said sophisticated B, don't be one
Not to head the warning crack of dawn
Or is it the dawn of crack?
Stop the talk they say, but
We talk and say whats right or wrong
Some say we wasting time singin' a song
But why is it that we're many different shades
Black woman's privacy invaded years and years
You cannot count my mama's tears
It's not the past but the future's
What she fears
Strong we be strong
The next generation
It's what not who we are facin'
The fingers pointed to us in our direction
The blind state of mind needs correction
Word to the mother we tighten connection
To be a man you need no election
This generation generates a new attitude
Sister to you we should not be rude
So we come together
And make 'em all say
Damn this generation

Just so you know that I like a balance in my rap.

Feelin on the bulge, thinkin it's her own
I tell her that it's money and she should move on
She says she's pure from legs to her thighs
And we should talk over some chinese and fries
I tell her to step, but hey that's the scene
Cause she ain't nothin.. but a Brooklyn Queen

We should talk over some Chinese and fries? Fantastic.

I'll be back after I hit my rap cassettes for a while.
