Kirby Puckett dead at 45

Died today after a stroke this weekend.

One of most fun ballplayers to watch when I was growing up. Overcame some ridiculous odds to be one of the best, who knows what he would've been if he would've played out his career. Understated in a way I don't believe we'll see again.

Salut Kirby Puckett, though you were a Twin, I liked you a lot!

So sad, both his death, and the quick decline of his public image due to various allegations. But, as a ballplayer, Kirby, you surely were not crap.

Mr. Puckett has provided me with many great memories as a Twins fan.

Also, Oucheh, I read on the StarTribune website that Mr. Puckett's age was actually 45 and that it was incorrectly listed on the Twins website, something he never bothered to have corrected.

Goodbye, Puck.

I've heard rumours of bad things off the field. Maybe I should investigate them online. He beat his wife, really?

On the field he was a force. He made some hard years of watching the White Sox, the mid to late Eighties, that much harder - much like guys did such as Molitor and Yount, George Brett, Rickey Henderson and seemingly the rest of the Oakland A's line up. The old American League West.

Having just looked it up, Puckett's career stats are something to behold. Do you realize over his career he averaged per season 209 hits, 97 runs, and 99 RBIs? And he was a force in the field, too.

What was it, glaucoma, that cut his career short?

From the baseball hall of fame website:

NBHoF wrote:A fun-loving and gregarious ball player, Kirby Puckett totaled 12 solid seasons with the Minnesota Twins. The 1982 first-round draft choice hit for power and average, batting .318 with 207 home runs. A true team leader, Puckett led the Twins to a pair of World Series titles in 1987 and 1991. The six-time Gold Glove winner was named to 10 consecutive All-Star teams from 1986 to 1995. Puckett finished among the top 10 in MVP voting seven times, only to have his career end prematurely after the 1995 season due to irreversible retina damage in his right eye.

Salut, Sox killer. You have been and will be missed.
