13A friend once explained the "Religion is the opiate of the masses" quote to me in terms of it being an undeniable necessity for humanity (alongside its opiate-ing characteristics) a la an opiate addict cannot be without his opium.
sports wouldn't be as debilitating to society if not transmitted through tv.
i don't think religion is to blame for wars, per se. if there wasn't religion, humanity would find another justification for killing its own in pursuit of some exercise of power.
