Bob Dylan or Neil Young?

this is a good point though
but still, jesus.
Bob Dylan or Neil Young?
13anybody who is saying Neil Young is the winner is clueless and hasnt listened to enough of either to make an informed opinion.
I realize, Steve, that Neil Young let Sonic Youth open for him and in your eyes that makes him some sort of indie God, but come on. Zuma, Tonight is the Night, After The Gold Rush, and most of his 70's albums are almost indistinguishable from one another. Not to say they arent good or even great, but Neil Young is not a diverse artist.
Sure, you can say he did that dumb Trans album and released an album of Feedback which probably gives him "indie cred" in your eyes but do you listen to those albums regularly? no.
Sorry. No two Dylan albums are the same or even close. He meandered in the 80's but so did Young. Neil Young's voice and delivery has basically always been the same, his guitar work is rudimentary classic rock bullshit and a lot of his songs are really really phony. I like Young, but there is absolutely no comparison between him and Dylan.
I don't care who came first, who is more influential or any of that. Dylans music stands on its own as far and away better than Young's,
Young did some great work with Buffalo Springfield and CSNY and had some good albums in the seventies. Thats as much credit as im willing to give the guy though.
Dylan went from singing the blues for woody guthrie and reverend gary davis, to becoming a folk prophet spokesman for his generation, to abandoning all of that for creating the most explosive rock and roll that had been made up until that point. (if you havent heard th albert hall 1966 bootleg than you dont know what im talking about).
and his career does not end in the sixties. listen to blood on the tracks desire or the rolling thunder revue or street legal or new morning and if you need any more proof that dylan was even more proficient and wonderful and diversified than Young in the seventies than your ears dont work.
Neil Young made some pretty great singer songwriter rock music in the 70's and was in some cool 60's rock bands but all you indie scenesters give him way too much credit.
Sorry. Bob wins this in a trot.![Laughing ](./images/smilies/icon_lol.gif)

Bob Dylan or Neil Young?

you motherfucker.
no.
but if you are going to compare someone to dylan, they better at least be able to change. neil youngs formula for a song has always been basically the same. he does singer songwriting folk rock. sometimes its harder, sometimes its softer. wow. doesnt that get boring?
sure, steve albini can say neil youngs zuma is better than anything dylan has ever done. ok, great. thats his opinion.
but one album does not make an artist. im sure steve albini would rather listen to some boring shit like the stooges than dylan too. but just cause the stooges made two or three albums he enjoys, that doesnt compare to someone who has been making brilliant, consistent albums (for the most part) for his entire 40 plus career.
it is hard to compare to someone like dylan because he is so different and is NOT like other artists. if you want, you can pigeonhole him and listen to a few of his sixties albums and blood on the tracks, but you will be the one who is losing. With Young, i have listened to a lot of his albums but i really dont see the point in lsitening to any more than 4 or 5. these are supposed to be his best and they are too alike. and even today, he is following that same formula. its boring. sorry.
Bob Dylan or Neil Young?
16the stooges
"TV Eye" is deeper lyrically than dylan's entire catalogue.
from rolling stone magazine, May 1973:
RS: So, the Stooges...
Dylan: LeMme StiZZoP you's rite mofuckin tHeRe! I WERSHIP at the alter of IgGy pOp. I am maybe a D student of the stooges. Also jewel blew me off the stage.
the date and quotes may be a little off but that was the gist of it
Bob Dylan or Neil Young?
18dylan wanted to sing with the new doors but they wanted someone better like scott stapp
Bob Dylan or Neil Young?
19the only album jim morrison would listen to for an entire year was "john wesley harding" by bob dylan
