Bob Dylan or Neil Young?

sorry, no. bob wins. his voice, songwriting, harmonica playing, and even guitar playing are better to the ears than young.

anyway, its been fun chatting you guys up, but the kerble's response was so stupid and self defeating, I have realized that this argument is pretty much over.

So in conclusion, Bob Dylan is better to listen to than Young and you are either fooling yourself or just don't know enough about Bob Dylan if you are coming to any other conclusion. Sorry, its just the facts

I cast my vote in Bob's direction on the strength of the LP's Desire & Nashville Skyline. I often play Desire immediately after Rid Of Me as an antidote to the scouring sound of this record. And that fiddle, man, it never fails to move me.

Nashville Skyline was the first of Bob's records I bought all those years ago: & I remain hopelessly sentimental about this work. Generally, I find it hard to concentrate on the lyrics to any song, but Lady Lay Lay captivates me every time - the richness of his voice as a young man was astonishing.

But then again, I'll never tire of listening to Southern Man (& who could?).

But Yeah, Bob, what a wonderful curmudgeon he is.

steve wrote:This one is easy for me. I've admired Bob Dylan from a distance for decades, but I never feel like listening to his music. I think I like absolutely everything about him except his music.

I especially like his approach to shows and recordings -- he does whatever he feels like, and if he likes it as it is, nobody can move him off it. If he doesn't like it, he might take another lap and do it again. In any case, he keeps it interesting for himself and he does it sincerely.

On the other hand, I can listen to Zuma four times running and still not get enough.

Neil in a trot.

yeah brah, you got it!

Regarding one of the earlier posts;
Bob's got some diversity and he does what he wants to do (didn't he just get off a tour where he played rudimentary keyboard versions of his songs?), but Neil has definitely followed his own weird internal logic all his life. I have always appreciated that, and so, Neil wins this contest. I also regularly listen to his feedback album Arc, because it is well-made.

Oh, and Neil has never been in a Victoria's Secret commercial. Maybe that's a point for Bob with some of you.

Bob and Neil have allot of similarities, really. Those maverick singer songwriters, always doing what the hell they want, fuck everybody else, etc..

Bob Dylan!

I really like Neil, hmmm...?

Maybe it's because my last Neil Young experience was so dreadful-Watching him play the whole "Greendale" lp in concert w/ the bad play going on in the backround, ugh, it was the worst. The few good songs he played near the end could not even begin to remove the stink from the amphitheater.

On the other hand, I'm having a blast listening to my fave Dylan on SACD'z. "Bringing It All Back Home" and "Blonde on Blonde" sound better than my vinyl first pressings. "Blood On The Tracks" is pretty close, but that was probably just a better recording/process to begin with.

Go BOB, GO!

This coming from someone whose name is Moron. haha :P

Anyway, when i listen to music, I wish to find that intangible emotional connection and for me, Dylan lacks where Young excels. all the donkeyfuck harmonica playing in the world won't bring me closer. Oh yeah, I pretty much hate the harmonica too. Even on Neil Young songs.

Cheers.

Neil Young wishes he could suck Dylan's dick.

Young is a great artist but Dylan is a GOD!

PS: I never expect people who've never heard Dylan play the harmonica live (I mean you have to be there and hear it live, not listen to it from a live CD) to "get" or like it. I was shocked/floored/whatever when I actually heard him play the harmonica. It was probably the most amazing and memorable part of the show.

my band (drummer: neil, guitarist: bob) were talking about this ridiculous subject, and the drummer summed it up well

it is like arguing over whether to eat french fries with mayonnaise or ketchup

i am ignoring the fact that mayonnaise on fries is disgusting

i shd note that throughout this discussion, i have conveniently ignored _the basement tapes_. the only reason i can come up with is that they are almost as much the product of the band as dylan, and since the band were a force in their own right (unlike crazy horse after their first sans-neil lp, or any of neil's other 'bands'), i felt like i could remove that record from consideration.

but _the basement tapes_ is really my favorite bob album, and if you factor that in...it makes it close for me

I was Neil at first, but my opinion is far closer to the middle. Like Steve, I'll listen to Neil more than Bob; but as much as some of Neil's songs move me, none of them move me as much as that live version of Visions of Johanna. There are other Dylan songs that are similarly affective, and I don't know that there are any Neil Young songs that move me in that way, or to that degree.

tmidgett's comparison between - what was it? Fast Times and Citizen Kane? is a good one for me. Sometimes I want to be moved in that Visions of Johanna way; but I don't know that I enjoy the experience as much as, say, listening to Ambulance Blues, which I can do over and over again.

Personally, I've never owned an album by either.

But as I sit here and think about it, more Neil Young songs flow from memory to the inner ear. Dylan, however is more of a cultural icon who I have respect for. And I can appreciate his arrangment skills, and his songcraft. But I cannot take his voice.

I think that I shall go acquire Zuma.
