90 s Chicago Post-Hardcore Revival

It just aint........... I have a practice space there, played a show there a few weeks ago, and have been working parties there for a year. I've also been trudging through there for 6 years. Perhaps we have different ideas about what makes a hipster.... and without going into it too heavily, because thats another topic already covered here on EA, you may be confusing another area for Wicker park. I'm referring to the neighborhood surrounding the intersection of North/Milwaukee/Damen.
i totally understand where you're coming from but this whole post-punk thing, in particular joy divsion influenced bands, even though i like it, is definitely getting old and you can tell from reading reviews that more and more "critics" are tired by it and less and less 80's revival bands are being formed.
i mean there is definitely a pattern here with the revival bands. 60's, 70's and 80's happened in that order so i can only see 90's being the next trend. and like each revival stage there will be one independent band, from that era, that gets more recognition than any other. it was joy division for the 80's and it would be logical for a band like jesus lizard or shellac to have the same influence on a whole new breed.
See when you say "It was Joy Division in the 80's" I'll have to say that that is disputable. You're talking about 1 style of music then, and based on that one style out of many of that time, you're making a prediction about the future of music. What if I said "It was Black Flag" in the 80's or "It was Rush in the 80's?" You can find a recent band influenced by them but that doesn't mean they have more precedence in the foundation of future styles.
"Essentially I think the future will result in even more styles of rock, at one time, than we've ever seen before."
it's possible but i'm not sure how likely that's around the corner. i mean on the underground it'll happen for sure, hopefully, but on a whole the mainstream will not deal with that. of course who cares about the mainstream but the point of this topic is what will be the next trend. i mean interpol is influenced by a great band that was never really popular back then for a number of reasons very obvious. however interpol took the same formula and made it more appealing to a broader audience. i like joy division better but i'm not the broader audience. so what i'm saying is "if" the 90's undeground revival happens, it'll take that influence and probably also make it more appealing.
kind of scary actually. i don't want any of this to be more appealing.
"On a whole, the mainstream will not deal with that...." Why not? It is becoming acceptable for an interracial marriage in the mainstream, why wouldn't it be acceptable to combine music styles? Another example is automobiles. At one time you had a car, a truck, or a van. Then you had these weird hybrids called "SUVs." Now you have hybrids of SUVs. So doesn't it appear that things in society are becoming increasingly desegregated? With this, my point was that i see music following the same suit.

23honestly, i hope you're right about the music. that would be great in my opinion.
post-punk was by far the biggest form of 80's revival in the last 6 years. that's the reason i mention joy division so much. there are a lot of bands that would not have existed then or now without joy division.
my prediction is just that, only a "prediction". i'm not trying to say i know anymore then the next man. it just seems logical for the next phase of "hipsters" to discover, if not already discovered, bands like shellac, the jesus lizard, scratch acid, big'n, tar, slint and so on.
now i've never lived in chicago but i have a few friends who have or still do and they all say that wicker park is lame now and that's where all the yuppies hang out. once again, i've never lived there so this is just based on hearsay.

24Ok, your friends find Wicker Park lame. that's valid. Even though it appears otherwise, I'm with your friends.
Yea i mean, I agree, I hope those bands don't get overly publicized either.

28Wicker Park has been uncool for over 5 years, probably more like 8. Wicker Park has been overflowing with hipsters for more than 5 years. And not the trend-setter type, but rather the douchebag tagalong type. The kind who still have backwards haircuts and wear riveted belts. Because they're not sure what the trendsetters will do next.
Doudes... fucking MTV's "The Real World" was set in Wicker Park like 6 years ago. When MTV jumps on your neighborhood cause it's hip, you KNOW it's not hip.
Wicker Park is not "real" hip. It's overly-trendy "hip", which is actually not "real" hip. I'd love to tell all you guys what the "real" hip neighborhoods/scenes are, but then, y'know, you and your backwards-hair-wearing douchebag friends would come and stink the place up with your goddamn post-hardcore.
BTW that Onion article is funny. But there's no worry. The actual trends indicate that the next wave of retro is going to be a quantum leap of retroness, and will go back at least 50 to 80 years. Ladies, start picking through eBay for good flapper-gear now. Men, you'll be looking quite dapper in your pinstripe suits. 23 Skidoo! Enjoy!
