Band: Nickelback

Okay. Someone I know listen's to this band for whom I was unfamiliar with. Asking for other music recommendations, I burned copies of Husker Du's "New Day Rising", Dinosaur Jr.' "Your Living All Over Me" and Fugazi's "Red Medicine". My rationale was: "they would like the melodic hooks, loud guitars". Sadly, no dice. The person just didn't "get it" they said. without elaborating much. In particular, they thought Dinosaur Jr. was too "abrasive". ABRASIVE? *Sigh*.

I decided to listen to some Nickelback to get the contrast. Just really banal, uninspired stuff. On Amazon, they get you recommendations for other bands and I played some samples by bands called "Trapt" and "Chevelle" and it produced the same result. Any of these bands could be interchangeable with one another. This is what I am trying to wrap my mind around, why anyone would pick Nickleback over the bands I burned copies of. Can someone illustrate for me the appeal? Because it is radio friendly? It has a nice, polish sheen? I really, really try when I recommend something to a person. Nine out of ten they usually haven't heard of them.

I consider myself open minded with diverse attitudes. I am not trying to criticize the person's taste, just the music.

Oh, Nickelback? CRAP

There's no ambiguity in the lyrics, and your friend is never at sea as far as figuring out the point of what he's listening to. That's pop songwriting.

This is based on the one time I've heard Nickelback, in a sub shop, and even though I heard the song only that one time, I remember what the guy was singing about. I'd be happy never to hear the song again, but I remember it, so maybe that's why it works for your friend.

How did our eyes get so red
And what the hell is on Joey's head

And this is where I went to school
Most of the time had better things to do
Criminal record says I broke in twice
I must have done it half a dozen times

Oh oh oh
Oh god I

Kim's the first girl I kissed
I was so nervous that I nearly missed
She's had a couple of kids since then
I haven't seen her since god knows when

Oh oh oh
Oh god I

Everytime I do it makes me

I think I've cracked the appeal of Nickelback, courtesy of their #1 smash hit song, "Photograph," currently playing on cell phones near you. It appears that Wolf-Dog (lead singer for Nickelback) is the bad boy type that the girls love, but also has a sentimental/nostalgic side. That's hot, but not as hot as a man who can't finish his sentences. Oooh! Leave me hanging, you bad boy, you!
