I'm going to suggest that you keep reading the microphone descriptions because you'll probably answer your own question. But at least check out the Beyer M201, the Coles/STC 4038, and the Altec 175. One of which is linked on the SM 57 page as "Similar to:"

For a cheaper alternative, the Shure KSM 141 is great. It can take a wide range of SPL. I've used it in a hundred ways with good results. It sounds generally good on snare, and guitar (acoustic and amp).

For electric guitars you can't beat a Beyer M-160 (if you can't buy afford a Coles 4038) ... It's a little more than a SM-57, but you will sure hear the difference... A Sennheiser 421 will beat the pants off of a 57 any day...

Just put them up next to a guitar and listen to the difference and you will never want to use a SM-57 again...

Just two days ago I used a Sm57 on electric guitar with good results. The guitar player wanted to have a slide guitar solo on one of their songs but forgot his slide at home. We used the Sm57 as slide and it worked just fine. It had a surprisingly large amount of low end compared to the plastic lighter that we tried before and it fitted much better to the Les Paul's neck than a M88.
The amp was miced with a M 160 and a At 4033.

That rocks!

Very True! M160 is a little to smooth when used alone, I like to mic a cabinet using a M160 and a 421. The 421 gives it that growl, like a cabinet. The M160 helps smooth out the killer "NAILS" in the guitar at 2-4Khz
Try the Beyer M88, I like it on Clean guitars!
