My favorite of late has been the stretch of fills/general drumming by Mik Glaisher about 2/3 of the way through the Comsat Angels' "Total War"

Great call. There's that part before the end with just mccartney and ringo, it makes my nipples hard.

You could cite any moment on any don cab album, but I still can't figure out how he fits in that fucked up snare work on "Delivering the groceries..." just before the guitars take over towards the end.

Sorry to the anti-zeps but I can't end this post without mentioning Bohnam on Misty Mountain Hop. I enjoy that song solely for the fills.

alan cage from quicksand is amazing. he's amazing, but his fills are usually super minimalist (like a single high-hat close during a 4-measure break). just listen to 'thorn in my side' from manic compression. brilliant.

and the rolls that the drummer from 'the bronx' pulls off during the song 'strobe life' are sick.

there's just too many to name.

and dave lombardo is the former drummer for slayer. he's the madman behind 'angel of death'.

i'd both agree on lombardo, and also contest it. those ARE awesome fills. but by his own admission, they were tracked at a slower speed and then sped up. he didn't actually play them like that. for that reason, i'd have a hard time counting them as the best ever, just for their fakeness. but to listen to them, hell yeah, thinking of some of the stuff from the song Raining Blood, too, there were some amazingly written fills there.

although the hi-hat fill before the lead break in that song always made me scratch my chin...

My three favorites are actually fairly similar, and occur at similar points in the songs: that little pause after the second to last chorus or bridge-

1)RAIN- The Beatles - i know it was already mentioned, but that little thing where McCartney and Ringo sort of lock up before the whole band kicks back in still makes me shit myself.

2)RIDE INTO THE SUN- The Velvet Underground - there is a demo/acetate version on a semi-legal boxed set called What Goes On (released on Raven Records out of Australia) which is different from the versions on Peel Slowly And See. It's a full band version, has a different arrangement (that whole silly "It's hard to live in the city" part is gone, and is one of my favorite late-period recordings from the band. Again, after the second to the last chorus, a pause and the glorious fill arrives. I'm not really sure if it's even Mo Tucker or Billy Yule, but I'd like to believe it's the former.

3)SHELLAC- Rambler Song- Comes in at the same place in the song as my other two favorites. I routinely bruise myself from playing this roll on my legs all clench-fistedly.

any fill buddy rich does........but if i must name one, it would be on sammy davis jr. and buddy rich SOUNDS OF 66 live at the copa room.......the first track "come back to me" the snare work is phenominal, as is most buddy rich snare work, but there are a few fills in this tr4ack that just make me poop myself. all other drummers are still learning from buddy. sorry.
