2 track recording on location with Uher

1
I'm currently using a Uher 1/4 inch machine for making recordings on location (when playing live etc.).
The Uher runs a steady 19 m/s and has two powered microphone inputs.
i'm now using two matched (small diaf.) condensors in a/b or x/y positions in front of the musicians (bout 10 ft.)
This works well for certain (suble) situations.
But...
I can't get a nice balance when i'm recording in a small room when there are several ampsand a drum kit (no vocals of course).
Should i use something other than the matched pairs or set them up differently? (one mike for drums, one for guitars? M/S stereo? )
I'm not looking to make a perfect recording, but rather a good reflection of a live situation (wich might be used as a basis for additional overdubs)
Thx

Why dont you use a mixer with a stereo buss out, then run that to the recorders left right inputs. Then you can mic each instument and the vocals. Maybe throw an xy pair in the room. It might take a few tries to get the balance and levels but it might work great for you. You can use a shitty little mixer like a Yamaha or Mackie for example.

I'm actually looking to just use two mikes. (wich makes an easy combination with the small uher recorder)
I'm very familiarwith X/Y and A/B techniques but for a loud band the positioning becomes rather crucial (there's more coloration etc.).
Again the defenition of individual instruments is less important to me than just getting a (two track) representation of the playing (sometimes crapp recording can d this just fine; i've used basic-tracksmadewith a home-made Binaural set (using two electrets and a headphone set) wich captures a situation far better than some 'clear' recordings.
thx
