i mean "the power out." this is such a great record --- i'm amazed that no-one has posted about it yet.
every sound is perfectly treated and placed; it seems to me that electrelane genuinely do sound live like they do on this recording (modulo the obvious caveats regarding poor live sound).
as far as the engineering goes, i'd be particularly interested to hear anyone's thoughts on the following:
*) choral ensemble on "the valleys." the localization of the various elements of the choir is striking; anyone know how this was achieved?
*) piano on "you make me weak at the knees." anyone know if this is a single piano part, or two layered parts? it seems like it needs more than two hands in places.
*) organ on "i'm on fire" (b-side from the "on parade" seven-inch). also the organ on "the valleys." the sound of the rotating speaker is very clearly represented in the recording, without sounding too dry or flat; anyone know how this was done?
" new" (newest) electrelane record
2Steve and the rest of the guys at Electrical (as well as the band) were kind enough to allow me to observe the recording of "On Parade" for "The Power Out." I saw that the Leslie was mic'd with a AT 4033 placed about 8 inches from the openings at the bottom of the cabinet. This was probably the setup for "I'm on Fire" as well. Any other questions regarding the recording of that particular song I can answer in detail if so desired.
I also have copious pictures of the recording session and would be willing to post them if anyone is interested.
