Ok... maybe the wallet is cooler.

You asked for it, man.

When I was in grad school, I won a contest that Ryko conducted online where the prize was a gtr lesson from Roger Miller.

You had to say in 20 wds or less why you deserved one. I guess Roger Miller liked what I said.

I couldn't afford to fly to Boston, and he wasn't coming out to AZ. So I asked him (via e-mail) to write me a lesson in letter form.

He asked me a lot of stuff about what I wanted to learn from him, what I was trying to do w/my playing, etc.

He ended up writing me a somewhere-in-the-neighborhood-of-10-pgs letter, and mailing it to me.

Of course, I still have this thing. Haven't re-read it in a while. It is so great.

He ended it with (something like) this: "Never forget, dude, that Jimi Hendrix is the baddest mo-fo who ever lived."

Salut, Roger Miller.

Do tell, Angus Jung. What were your prize-winning 20 words?

Someone I know (that knows Roger pretty well) says that he thinks way too highly of himself, so a 10 page letter doesn't surprise me.

10 pgs were written in a spirit of generosity, wisdom, and musical fellowship, not in a spirit of thinks-highly-of-self.

I'll be fucked if I can remember what my winning entry was (the contest took place 9 or 10 yrs ago). But I should clarify and say that he picked 3 winners. I was not the one person who won the whole thing.

from the matador bulletin board, even:

Our apologies to all subscribers:

Unfortunately we've had continual delays stemming from the laser engravings. The plants keep giving us new delivery dates.

We are hoping the first one will ship from the plant this Friday March 31, and then to customers sometime next week.

Once again, we apologize for the delay - we're as frustrated as you are.

Best
Patrick

Wow. I can't believe I didn't notice this when you first posted it. I was one of the other three people who won that contest. I was the tender age of 17 and I had never left Texas. So I actually bought a plane ticket and went to Boston. The lesson was only supposed to last an hour but he talked to me for probably over two hours. He also told me about the record store where Peter Prescott worked and I went there to meet him and get my Kustomized cd autographed. They were both incredibly nice and generous. I went back a year later and actually paid for a lesson. Again, he went over the time limit to give me a lot of advice and anecdotes. Though that was almost a decade ago, I still use what I learned from those two little lessons all the time.
