Anyone made (or simply assembled) their own drums?

I have jumped into this, I have a custom shell on order, as well as custom machined lugs for my first project snare.

I'll post later w/ results, if they are worthy and non-embarassing.

i've been thinking of building a guitar myself, getting a hagstrom 3 body and doing whatever with it... just for fun and custimization i guess...

Not as much as buying some off the shelf Taiwan produced kit, but damn...more than I was hoping.

The snare is approx $450 in materials, and I need to buy some tools and finishing supplies as well.



Whole kit is gonna land around $1500+ in materials for four pieces. But it will be TITS.

unfortunately, building your own drums doesn't really save you any money. but hey, it's fun, and if you do a good job, you have something unique, and as good as anything you'd buy at your normal big box music store.

if you're into doing something different, you should check out tempus drums. he builds shells out of fibreglass, and they rule. i have a snare i built from one of his shells, and it is great. sensitive, but with poewer to spare. the shells are a bit more expensive(of course) but the finish is built into them, so you don't have to buy finish materials for them.

anyway. good luck on your project. post some pics when you get done.

I am looking at Tempus down the road for sure.

So far on this kit:

Snare:
7x14 - 7/16" thick segmented shell made of bloodwood, steel hoops.
Ego tube lugs and strainer
All hardwear in black chrome

The big expense was the shell and strainer, but I figure hey, make it nice the first time.

Balance of the kit will be keller birch VSS shells and Ego single lugs. All black stained w/ hand rubbed tung oil finish.

Later I'm adding a 20" gong bass.

I've priced out something similar through custom builders (actually not as nice hardwear, etc) and it comes out to at least $2300, so I think I'm going to be really happy if I get it all in under $1500.

gong bass drums are badass.
