It's worth bearing in mind that Iranians are also fiercely loyal to their Persian heritage, and that there's nothing like an external threat to this to unite people - however tenuous that relationship may be.
It doesn't help that Ahmadinejad has made the race to join the nuclear club a matter of national pride either. It seems that for the average Iranian their country's ability to compete with its near neighbours (Pakistan, India and I suppose Israel) is now a matter of principle.

Mind you, all this could be another spectacular example of 'blowback' for the US.

sunlore, the israelis are really nice people. but it's hard living here, I don't feel any connection to the country itself, I could have lived anywhere else in the world. So I don't mind giving this place to the palestinians, I just don't want to fight them and the whole world.

No offense to other people here but I personally could give a shit about the Middle East. Also, Islamic, fundamental extremists bother me more than anything else. I would rather maintain a facade of caution rather than embrace a group of people that have no love for Westerners as a whole.

Read Jigaboo's post again- he argued that Iran was on the road towards a greater rapport with the US before Iran witnessed what could happen to a country that was helpless to repel Western aggression.

I wonder why Mutually Assured Destruction was an acceptable fact of nuclear armament that kept the US and the USSR from going to war for sixty years, but it's outrageous to suggest that M.A.D. has any place in the Middle East re: Israel and Iran.
