Whoops...I realized today I downloaded a version of the album that was all EQ'ed in the red, hence the shitty sound and why I didnt like the album as much.

Its really not that bad actually, but Kim's voice/the cheese riffs can get a bit straining.

So in conclusion, album leaks can suck cause you might be getting a lesser quality product. I DLed the actual thing, and its much better. I have always bought the album for Sonic Youth, even if I heard it leaked. I own all of their major records (the main ones except the SYRs), actually.

Really like it.
The most noticable thing is the clean to distored guitar ratio is way up.
There is still a bit sonic youth noise on it, just no where near as much as previous records.

Alright, I'm a huge Sonic Youth fan. I thought there were some really great moments on Sonic Nurse and Murray Street (though this record isn't the classic that most people will have you believe). I really dig the classic 80s trilogy of EVOL, Sister, and Daydream Nation. I thought Goo, Dirty, and EJSTNS were all damn good records, with some questionable moments. My favorite is Washing Machine, which might not be a popular pick, but I think that this record is a complete masterpiece.
Anyway, I'm familiar with all of their records, and I think the new record is the weakest, most boring thing they've ever done. I find the songwriting to be totally unadventurous, I swear that Kim's vocals are auto-tuned to glossy shit, and the melodies are unmemorable. Some of my favorite songs by the Youth are their quieter moments, so that has nothing to do with my dislike for this record.
I'm just really sick of rock bands getting all mellow and boring as they age. Even the moments I disliked on previous SY releases were always interesting. I'd rather they made another fucking NYC Ghosts and Flowers than this pile of dung. At least that record had character.
This didn't happen to all classical composers. Beethoven, Wagner, Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Mahler...they all got more far out and twisted as they became older.
Hell, the stuff Miles Davis was doing at the age of 40 was heavier and darker than anything he'd done up to that point.
I'm completely surprised that no one else on this forum (except for irony engine) has commented negatively on this record. Maybe I'm just crazy, I don't know.

haven't heard any single song ... but I read some comments about being too poppie and I think thats not too flatering for a band as adventorous (sic) as Sonic Youth

I also think its pretty dreary - loved Sonic Nurse, but this I'm just bored of listening to already. Its almost as lack-lustre as her acting in 'The Last Days'..

I agree with you on this. This album isn't bad, it's just boring and not very much different from the last two albums, although Murray Street and Nurse do have their moments. I've listened to it more than a few times now to make sure I'm not missing anything but it just sounds like dull easy-listening music to me.

Why would Mark Ibold play bass? Sonic is a four piece again. Jim went on to pursuing film... Kim is back on bass. If you mean to fill in for tracks they wrote as a five-piece that may be true.

ibold is a killer bass player and so underrated it's depressing.

The album so far is okay but not really breaking new ground.
