I do like Soundgarden. I do. I like 'em a bunch.
But Abba? I fucking LOVE ABBA.
either-or: Soundgarden vs. Abba
43ABBA are the DNA of pure pop enjoyment. I have never enjoyed Soundgarden. mind you i dont really "enjoy" ABBA but they are far catchier and their arrangements are stellar.... so ABBA by a landslide. Chris Cornell always sucked.

44In fairness to Soundgarden, Chris Cornell is the strawman of this argument. Ben Shepherd's songs were really good! If you were to go through your Soundgarden catalogue and make a mix cd of all the songs written by Ben Shepherd, this would be a damn good album.
For me, SOUNDGARDEN wins on the wings of their weirdo bassist.

45Has anyone deeply delved into the final ABBA album, "The Visitors"? It's more 'mature' than their other material, which means less hooks and some AOR trappings and REALLY DEPRESSING songs. But it's still really good, I quite like it. And there's a bonus track from those sessions "You Owe Me One" which is hooky and stuff like the ABBA of old. A really good album. I also love Voulez-Vous and Super Trouper. The rest of their albums are really really hit and miss; they were a singles band 'til Voulez-Vous and then really became an album band.
I did not like Soundgarden save for a couple neat guitar riffs here and there. There's a lot of fucks out there playing in drop D because they first heard it from them. That alone is a lot to answer for...and more people can learn from ABBA.

You tune your guitar to A-B-B-A ? Cripes. That's Thurston Moore level whack.

The Visitors is easily my favourite Abba record. It's the sound of their relationships imploding, but hip-shakingly so.
I hear the door-bell ring and suddenly the panic takes me
The sound so ominously tearing through the silence
I cannot move, I'm standing
Numb and frozen
Among the things I love so dearly
The books, the paintings and the furniture
Help me...
The signal's sounding once again and someone tries the door-knob
None of my friends would be so stupidly impatient
And they don't dare to come here
Anymore now
But how I loved our secret meetings
We talked and talked in quiet voices
Smiling...
So good. So very good.

48sorry, people: Abba fuckin' sucks!
i can't claim to be well versed in their back catalog, but i'm pretty damn sure i like Soundgarden more. (if you take "Spoonman" and a couple other clunkers off Superunknown, i'd say it's a pretty good album. put "The 4th of July" after "Gut Feeling" on a mix tape and you will have a damn good juxtaposition.
i don't give a fuck if Stephen Merritt likes Abba.
i'm an open-minded dude, but "Dancing Queen" is nauseating dreck. when i hear it on the radio at work i feel like i'm having that giant centipede creature work its way through my rectum. (no, this is not a pleasnt sensation.)
fuck Abba, i'd rather listen to Sixpence None The Richer.
