Greetings from Wisconsin.
I am planning an excursion to Chicago in the near future. First of all I am concerned with the parking. I will be visiting the Auditorium Theatre on my two days in the city and staying at the Hostel that is near there. Would like to find parking close to there. I'm told there is a parking garage across the street from the hostel but it is at $18 per 24hour x2 days I will be there. Is there any place cheaper within reasonable walking distance?
I think there are some museums or something near there. Are they within walking distance from the auditorium? And are they any good? Anything else you recommend? I have most of one day to kill in the city with no plans thus far.

I doubt it.

The Art Institute is great. It's right there.
The Field Museum is not far from there, and it is also great.
You can see these places' websites on the internet.

Are you intending to leave your car parked for the duration of your visit, or are you going to be using it to get around while you're here?
If you'll be leaving it, you could probably leave it on one of the north / south streets that run between Harrison and Roosevelt, possibly Jefferson or Des Plaines. They're pretty wide open on weekends, and not all metered, I don't think. You're within a mile of the loop in that area- you could dump your bags at the hostel and then park and walk back. Just pay close attention to any signs that mention street cleaning.
If you want frequent access to your car, you can probably get something around 12-14 dollars a day in a lot near Wabash and Van Buren.
Other option is to get a three day unlimited CTA pass and park off an Orange Line stop near downtown for free, and travel to your car when needed by El. CTA pass will be the way to go out to the neighborhoods, a good investment.
