There are some good venues, but they are mostly small cafes or abandoned crackhouses (such as Turd Furgeson House, in Abbotsford). Yeah, good venues, you know.

Dandi Wind is a psuedo-experimental art student shrieking almost constantly, but she has interesting songs (which, it has been pointed out, are rare here). She's been in Montreal for some time now, so catch her if you get the chance.

The Doers are an acoustic-punk band worth seeing. Their bassist especially is quite impressive. He got into a bad accident a few years back and Mike Watt, being a fan of the band, came down to replace him for a while.

I'd be interested in meeting up to do something creatively/bitch about things, if anyone's interested. I'm going to the Art Institute for Recording right now, and have access to the studios there...

It's not what you'd conventionally call music, but I quite like The Vancouver Soundscape 1973 from the World Soundscape Project. It's basically just sound recordings from the Vancouver area and was meant to be part of a study to represent good and bad acoustic design in the city. They went on to collect field recordings from all over Canada and the rest of the world. I think there's also a compostional element to it. Vancouver, she is a very musical region, no?
