Yes. Conviction is good, band still seems to be gaining confidence/searching for thier own voice, but still well worth tracking down. The live album is very no wave, almost DNA-esque at times.

I still can't get over what an incredible band they were, glad to hear these albums are being reissued.

Here is an appropriately -- actually almost incoherently -- praiseful article about Ut. The author seems to have one or two odd ideas about music, and repeatedly and inexplicably refers to an album he calls "In Ut's House," but it's a nice read anyway.

I have one of their records, and I am not sure if that is their only record or the first of a few.

It's called Time Wounds All Heals, and was on a label called Egypt records.

I just went into the other room to find this record, just for you guys!

Excellent essay and interview, Andrea. Thanks for posting those mp3s, too. Sally Young's comments about Ut's approach to performing were especially interesting to me.

Is the Mark Sinker quote from a piece that is available online or elsewhere? I googled for it, to no avail.

I've wondered if "Ut" might have referred to the word "uterus"; that notion seemed far-fetched until I considered the Gynecologists. I hope someone will succeed in prying that tape loose soon, too.

("Ut" is also a Latin preposition meaning "to" or "so that." [orgasm of pedantry face])

I've asked Nina about any Gynecologist tapes and she's not sure there are any... She's going to do some asking around though (maybe Robert Appleton has something?). I'll let you know.

As for the origin of the name, the answer wasn't in the interview because it's still being refined. The uterus derivation wasn't mentioned though...

Not really surprised, but the seeming congruence w/"the Gynecologists" did give me pause for a minute there.

Oh, I'll have to visit Mark's blog. Didn't know he had one... That article isn't online that I know of —a friend found it and typed it up for me.
