I don't get that. Have you a photo or a link.

So i'd essentially want to wire this thing to an unbalanced 1/4 inch? Or am I misunderstanding what you are saying.

No, wire it to XLR or any other balanced connection that you prefer.

but it's beige and a tad weatherd.

That is an MD21, not an MD421. Your mic is an omni-directional dynamic. I used to have one. If it is beige (gold) then it will probably be a Grundig model. Assuming is is an HN model, then yes, follow my previous instructions.

In the off chance it is high impedance only (eg. MD21H) then you may wantto consider removing the step-up transformer inside to make it low impedance. This is unlikely.

OK, i think I understand. Wire the hot and cold, and tie the earth into the cable shielding or connector metal housing.

Yes. The actual plug has three pins, one (-) and two (+) which you have to choose one of. Check with a multimeter and you will see that one pair is lower resistance (and hence low impedance).

May I ask who you bought this from?

I took a look at the badge of the mic again and the model number is MD21HN. Yes it's beige (gold).

I bought the pair off of ebay a couple of months ago for around 175$

It doesn't have a make on the mic itself, but the auction listed them as beyer mics, but it looks exactly like the Sennheiser in the picture i linked to.

Yeah, I'm 100% certain they are Sennheiser (rebranded as Grundig) MD21HN. Dual impedance.

Follow the wiring instructions I gave, unless the mic has a fixed cable, in which case you will need to get your multimeter out. The brading on the fixed cables is terrible and would require a wire soldered to it.

No fixed cable, which is why I need to make one. i hand made one out of socket pin connectors i found at a local electrical shop, just to see if they worked and to figure out the pin config. Now I need a real cable to use in everyday activity.

following the other forum post you mentioned the tuchel parts site that had the 3 pin din female that i'll pickup and just wire my own tuchel to xlr cable for use.

Good to know exactly what make and model these girls are.

Thanks again for all your info. This forum has quickly become my favorite for "I wonder how the fuck to do that" questions.

If you can handle not having a locking thread, you can just use a standard 3-pin DIN socket instead, although they are usually plastic. These are available in any electronics shop - eg. Radioshack.

Yeah, there are a lot of decent people here, and very few boneheads. It's also nice how the people here like a wide variety of good music too.
