I’ll second the list of Crazy Horse nominees and add to it the double live album “Weld” recorded during the first Gulf War. This album somehow redefined the limits of their own sound, although it might have been more palatable at half the length. Apparently Neil Young’s Fender Deluxe goes up to 11.

Lou Reed’s 2000 album “Ecstasy” has some incredible guitar tones, and well-recorded ones.

Some of the guitar moments on "Tzomborgha" by The Ruins are incredible.

Hella's "Hold Your Horse Is" has some starkingly original sounding riffs.

I'll always be addicted to Man...Or Astro-Man?'s reverb-laden space-surf guitar.

And I also vote for Spiderland, Goat, Loveless and Helmet.

marr was really fucking good, lyle preslar's minor threat stuff, coral's first single(not "the coral"), alot of gong has good stuff,fudge tunnel-hate songs in e minor, the meters, the dazzling killmen's P.I.L. cover on their first single. britt walford is the most tuneful drummer i've ever heard.booty this booty that.

Yeah... the Meters definatiely had it going on most of the time...
those guys were pretty unstoppable in most aspects...

The View From this Tower from Faraquet definately has its moments as far as technical brilliance is concerned.... The guitar sound/tone/quality is also pretty top notch...

Hella's Hold Your Horse Is is worth mentioning by all means...

Another guitarist worth mentioning would be John Frusciante (particularly on BloodSugarSexMagik).... he's always found that perfect mix between rock and funk, with diverse sounds and always killer tone!

Stevie Ray Vaughn was technically sound and always seethed w/ style.... great representation of blues/lick/riff work w/ tone tone tone....

Joey Santiago from the Pixies (circa Surfer Rosa) = unstoppable

The guitar work of Tortoise doesn't jump out and eat your lunch... but is great in context (sonically).

Richard Hell and the Voidoids' "Blank Generation" is a great guitar album.
I really like the guitars on Captain Beefheart's "Trout Mask Replica", "Clear Spot", "Doc At the Radar Station" and "Ice Cream for Crow".
Fred Smith's and Wayne Kramer's interaction produced some great moments of rock history.
