i now use a pearl eliminator pedal http://www.pearldrum.com/pedals.asp which is much better than anything i'd used in the past. super solid construction, and fast, smooth action. it comes with a nice case a la the iron cobra. totally worth the extra dough.

The link here to the Eliminator has the red thing I was talking about. And looks familiar so that's probably it. Sweetest pedal I've ever used. Highly recommended. But with all those different colored things it might be versitle enough for you to get a different feel if you're not happy with it.

Wow. I'm thinking about ditching my DW...thanks. I will definitely try this out.

Well, after bidding unsuccessfully on a couple DW 5000's on ebay, I ended up getting a Yamaha FP 9310 double chain pedal, apparently with an upgraded beater, at my local source for used stuff (Atomic Music in College Park, MD).

It looked very solid, I paid $89 for it, and - it plays great!
A huge step up from the wiggly, worn no-name pedal that came with ye olde Tama Rockstar.

Thanks again for y'all's input.

Important:

WD-40 wil stop squeeks, but it's about the worst thing to use on a chain long term. It is a solvent and a moisture displacement formula, NOT a lubricant. Chains have many moving parts, they need lube.

Keep WD-40 the fuck away from the bearings. Cartridge bearings have a sealed pack of grease inside that WD-40 can potentially remove, leaving the bearings without enough lube.

Best? Triflow or Boeshield T4 on the chain - find it in bike shops. One small bottle will last years on a kick pedal.

Keep moisture and everything else away from the bearings, replace them every few years when needed.

BTW - I was a pro bike mechanic, if that's worth anything.

Ah, you too? I wondered about the name. I have a Z1 on my surly right now. I was slacking on the chains. He's right. WD-40 has a very small amount of lubricating agent. It's basically a cleaner. Teflon lubricants work awesome.

Carry on.
