I agree 100%.

I don't see the appeal at all.

CRAP.

i saw them on a tour with goatsnake and orange goblin years ago, that was great. i saw them at the first nightmare before christmas while coming down off acid, perfect. i saw them with earth a while back and was a bit "oh..yeah. that's what i thought you were going to do" and preferred earth even though i couldn't see them as i was on the door. as mentioned earlier, i much prefer khanate. but, give me the melvins any day.

erm, was not was(crap)?

HA! I was wondering if that fiasco was going to show up. I'm a heavy, HEAVY poster on that site. That thread got out of hand, but it boils down to this:

The promoter/club owner of that festival is a stand-up guy who's been in the business a long time and who's never fucked anyone over.

O'Malley acted like an art-school prima donna dick and was lucky not to get his ticket punched.

If Steve threw a monitor off the stage and had no good reason to do it, that's not cool. But I've seen fucking Sebadoh do that.

When Eric Gaffney did it, the soundman threatened to kill him, he walked off, and that was that.

In this case, the booker goes online and complains at length that:

--Sunn asked for too much money etc. The complete details of which were so classily reprinted in his post. Why he acceded to their demands, we'll never know. What a charitable fellow.

--Sunn's music is boring, though not quite boring enough to not book.

--They weren't nice enough to him, though somehow he was in a fine mood until O'Malley threw the monitor.

All the while, he blows his own horn as a guy who is happy-go-lucky (yet also super tough) and doesn't like to live in the past.

It's a little weak. Kind of like paying someone thousands of dollars to play your festival and then telling them their music isn't your cup of tea.

And going to a small music fest and not bothering to listen to a single other band on the bill? Rude CRAP.

Man, who cares. I've done this a million times on tour. The last thing you want to do sometimes is watch live music. especially when you're playing live music yourself every night.

He didn't do it in the throes of performance. He did it AFTER the set was over and people had cleared out, just to be pissy. And Sebadoh would be dicks for doing it too. What's your point?

Actually, we do know, as you would if you'd read on. He took on Sunn to get Boris. And that's the only reason. Greg posts on that board a lot and he told the story because he was pissed at Sunn and because the regulars wanted to know what had happened. It went down after most of them had gone outside after Sunn's set.

--Sunn's music is boring, though not quite boring enough to not book.

See above.

--They weren't nice enough to him, though somehow he was in a fine mood until O'Malley threw the monitor.

Nice enough? O'Malley threw his expensive equipment and, he found out later, they stole quite a bit of champagne from his fridge. They stole from him.

All the while, he blows his own horn as a guy who is happy-go-lucky (yet also super tough) and doesn't like to live in the past.

Which is exactly what he is. If he weren't, he would've punched O'Malley's lights out for attempting to break an expensive piece of equipment belonging to a man who'd just paid him AND provided room and board. Would it be okay if I shat on my boss's desk as long as I did my job well and had completed my 40 hours that week?

It's a little weak. Kind of like paying someone thousands of dollars to play your festival and then telling them their music isn't your cup of tea.

He was asked his opinion, so he gave it. And he gave it in relatively diplomatic terms. Big, bad paragons of avant garde metal can't handle "not my cup of tea"? That's weak. Like I said, he booked Sunn to get Boris. He didn't make them a package deal. He never told Sunn he was looking forward to them playing. And I'm sure if he'd had his way, Boris would've headlined that night, not Sunn.

And going to a small music fest and not bothering to listen to a single other band on the bill? Rude CRAP.

Catching one or two bands at a small, very intimate festival where nearly everyone knows each other, or will by the end of the thing, is just common courtesy, not to mention friendly. It's not a deal-breaker, it just was indicative of O'Malley's swollen head.

Like I said in that SR.com thread, the only people excusing Sunn in even the tiniest respect are people who don't know Greg.
