Grave - "Into the Grave" is always the one that comes to mind. Huge sound, memorable power-riffs, simple, non-wanky, not cartoonishly over-the-top.

Disatrous Murmur "Rhapsodies In Red"

Morbid Angel - everything up to "Covenant". "Abominations of Desolation" is my favorite, even though the actual recording is 4 years too early for this thread.

Carcass "Symphonies of Sickness" - This is a total death metal LP. "Reek" and the demo had the most grindcore on them but even those had lots of DM parts as well.

Blasphemy "Fallen Angel of Doom" should maybe be mentioned. It's a bonified black metal album but nothing like the Norse stuff. It's totally relentless and unique. It's got the brutality of death metal, the speed of grindcore, and the rawness of black metal.

Last but not least...

AUTOPSY - all albums!

I WAS JOKING.

Whaddaya mean you were joking? I was totally digging on you when you mentioned that because I had totally forgotten about this effin' gem of an awbum. It's definitely in my top 5 (displacing My Dying Bride), so influential and unique for its time. Yes it was considered "grindcore" but is mos def a Death Metal album.

BTW, you young-uns MUST check out The County Medical Examiners. Total old school Carcass worship to the extreme, right down to the keyboard intros and dual vocal wipeouts.

Scott, you say Death Metal can't have synths? I partially agree, but do you remember a band called Nocturnus? Mos Def a Death Metal band but with a full time keyboardist. They kinda sucked, but were "real" DM nonetheless.

I do and I did mean to mention them, recorded at Morrisound (I think), from Tampa Bay, ex-Morbid Angel, definitely DM, but not terribly good. I think "Lake of Fire" was their winning track, must try to track it down

*edit*
good grindcore/Earache article

I remember them well enough. I saw them live once, on accident, because they were opening for somebody I was seeing (I forget who). The most noteworthy thing about that band was the frightening speed with which the bassist finger-picked. The second most noteworthy thing was how retarded the keyboard was. Thus they do not qualify as death metal, by my standards. They do, however, qualify as retardo-synth-havin'-metal.

What next, you're gonna tell me Mordred was cool?

So, by that rationale, a band isn't death metal by your standards, not because they have synths, but because they consist of retards. Tsk, tsk, not very nice  My point is, there are plenty of DM bands with ultra cheesy qualities who absolutely suck (i.e. Nocturnus) but are indeed Death Metal. Your point is definitely noted and agreed upon, however.

And yes, Mordred were really quite lovely. Any "metal" band with a scratcher/DJ/whatever is the shit in my book.
