Decade Box

It is a box with switches on the front that can emulate any value of resistor (or capacitor). You simply dial in the value that you want. It gets its name because you have one switch that adjusts the value in units of one ohm, one switch for tens, one for hundreds, one for thousands and so-on.

I would have to add that around here they've been largely superceded by resistor kits which are much cheaper than they used to be.

Hey.

How about the resistor values on this thing?

Do any seem odd?

I was looking at one today that couldn't do exactly 47K......which I thought to be pretty lame.

Strange thing is that it was the kind with little slider-switches and a jack instead of leads and a plug like the one mentioned above.

Lemme know if anyone can think of a "common" guitar-amp value that isn't available here.

Here's one for caps too. Must be shitty though.

I can't read the fucking print.

You might check ebay I have noticed that some of the Hallicrafters type from the 50's - 60's for sale. They seemed to be nice units. Generally things like testing equipment goes very cheaply on ebay much of the testing equipment seems to have been from factories in the 70's and is very good. Not so many home electronics guys making radios.

The Internet is great as it is possible to get electronics kits and parts. The kit you linked to looks really nice. Thought I saw a home made decade resistance box last year and it had three dials for resistance and I don't know if that gives you more options.
