Well, I know one of the guys and he hated the change as did two of the others. But they had just recorded a record in the US and their label refused to put it out unless they changed their name...

If it's any consolation they issued a public apology for the name change and the pussy MOR album, which they now only play one song off.

Churn, Killjoy, s/t and Love is the New Hate are all good records.

Mama, can I touch you there?

at least he had the decency to ask...

bands that bring it...a-ha were pretty good and the bootleg beatle is enjoyed a lot too. 'george' played the 'harpsichord' solo from In My Life on the SG. i was well impressed.

More like second rate Helmet without shirts.

Ugh. Next.

Killjoy, the album that track is off is brilliant, the recording is really nice as well, live, direct to tape.

Their first two records and the latest one are much better than a lot of Helmet's output and I'm a big Helmet fan.

I have to agree with Gramsci. Shihad BRING IT live. I'm not sure what the You Tube thing is as I can't veiw it just now. But I've seen them enough times to know they're a great live band.

The Pacifier thing is pretty embarrassing. But they aren't the first band to do something stupid when pressured by their label.

bands that brought it:

DevilDriver -- Sounds of the Underground '05 and opening for Gwar Nov' 05

Tight Bros From Way Back When -- 924 Gilman Sept 01

Mike Watt -- bass w/ J Mascis and the 3 times I saw his trio '00-'02

The Locust -- Feb 05.

Unearth -- Sounds of the Underground 05

My Morning Jacket -- great when I saw them open for Ben Kweller back in summer '02. Never heard of em, Jim James had hair in his face.

Joel RL Phelps The Downer Trio were really great when I caught them last year, but I love JRLP anyway so I think this is biased. Same for Jonathan Richman. Gwar has "brought it" sometimes, but failed to do so others.

Get dog costumes wrote:1. Mission of Burma last October at the Cat's Cradle hit the spot, not least because they're one of my favorite bands and I obviously never imagined I would see them play. Even better, they (except Prescott) hung around for a long, long time after the show, making sure everyone who wanted to meet them had a chance.

3. British Sea Power in March 2004...this is before they went pop, and there was amazing guitar soloing, funny costumes, and the guitarist literally swung from the pipes on the ceiling. Here's to you, Go Room 4.

These WERE great shows. I was at both of them at was blown away.

I've never seen a bad Burma show. The Cradle show was topped for me by Irving Plaza, NYC, because it was their second show re-formed, and it seemed like it would be one of maybe 5 ever, and 9:30 in DC, because my friend knows Clint, and we got to hang out with the band. Roger was doing the set list and couldn't think of another song. I said "I really like Playland" and he said "good idea!" They played it in the second set (probably would have anyway) and it felt cool.

Top 15, in no order:

Kraftwerk, 9:30 Club, last year. Those old guys are *still* cutting edge.

Any of last year's Gang of Four shows.

Steve Wynn and the Miracle 3, Howlin' Wolf/TapeOpCon, 2004

Six Finger Satellite/Shellac, some little playhouse in NYC, mid-90s

Of Montreal, Knitting Factory, CMJ 2005

The Church, UNC Memorial Hall, Fall of 1988

My Bloody Valentine, UNC Memorial Hall, 1991(?)

Slint, London UK, March 2005

Pavement, Cat's Cradle, "test" show while recording Brighten the Corners. Played mostly with Mitch Easter's gear - Orange amps, and vintage guitars.

Cheap Trick, Cat's Cradle, 2001 (They still got it)

Polvo, Cat's Cradle, New Dark Age era

Sonic Youth, Cat's Cradle, Daydream Nation era

Sea and Cake, Cat's Cradle, Oui tour

Archers of Loaf, any show, any venue

Super Furry Animals, Radiator Tour (a complete surprise - they were great)

Saw the Jesus Lizard and Dinosaur Jr. in '91 but I was, um, significantly impaired, and David Yow scared me, so I don't know whether they brought it or not. They probably did.

(If that was obnoxious, the list of bands that did not particularly bring it when I saw them would be at least as long, and would include many whose music I enjoy.)

15 bands I did not see but would wager that they brought it:
Sex Pistols. If they'd played Chicago in '78, I would've.
Les Rallizes Denudes
Joy Division
Led Zeppelin
Devo
Queen
Glenn Branca
Wipers
Spacemen 3
My Bloody Valentine
Bailter Space
Kraftwerk
Bikini Kill
Dog Faced Hermans
Ut

Two bands I have not seen yet but expect to bring it when I do:
The Ex
U.S. Maple

melvins w/ jello this winter was intense. i dunno about the rest of the tour but in philly it was a full melvins set, and then jello came out and did the new stuff and lots of dk songs.

racebannon at macrock i guess 3 years ago. i dont particularly enjoy their records but it was a spectacle let me tell you.

lightning bolt never disappoints.

definitely high on fire. matt pike is fucking out of control. who even plays a guitar like that?

the almighty ink and dagger.

also... i have never seen the crucifucks in person as i am 23 years old, but on video at least... that singer is one of the creepiest dudes to ever touch a microphone and creepy will get you far with me.
