i've got a session coming up on friday where i'll be recording a largely improvised band. they want to basically do a big long jam and then cut it up afterwards and stick together the best bits. i'm recording on my tascam tsr-8 1/2". it occurred to me that 499 tape will run about 30 minutes long (at 15ips). i have a spare reel of 407 that will do about 45 minutes but i'd rather not use it as the quality is noticeably lower.
anyone got any ideas / suggestions?
thanks.

2i'm unfamilar with that machine - does it have a 'tape speed' adjustment?
on some of the lower end recorders, there's a little 'pitch' or 'speed' adjustment that, if all the way down, would probably give you a few more minutes ( and i don't there will be too much quality loss).
i am curious about what electrical does in these type on situations? greg? steve? russ? andrew? new intern guy?

3I'm not one of those guys but I can say that when I did a record there we used the larger reels (15" ?) . I think it gave us 22 minutes @ 30 ips.
So thats the solution if the machine can take the larger reels.

4jeremy - yup, it does have a pitch adjust. i'd be a little hesitant to use it though maybe you're right and i'll have to make do.
hollis - unfortunately my machine won't take the bigger reels. thanks for the suggestion, though!

a friend of mine actually modded his 15 ips machine to go to 11 ips which gave him a little more time and he thought it gave him better bass response (i didn't notice any difference). the only noticable difference that i heard was the tape noise was lower pitch which wasn't a big deal to me. I've recorded bands direct to 2 track at 7.5 ips and it worked out fine.
